All this talk of “what if Brees signed with Miami” completely discounts Sean Payton

Agree or disagree?
The last 24 hours have been a lot of, “Saban would still be in the NFL”, and different iterations of that. But how do you just completely ignore Payton’s influence?
Obvious Drew is a legend, but it ain’t like he was a sure thing in San Diego and Sean had more skins on the wall at that point.
Idk, seems foolish to discount one of the 5 best offensive minds in NFL history and assume Saban would have gotten the same results.

Imho, Sean deserves all the accolades with Drew as a dynamic duo.

Well maybe Saban lasts slightly longer with Brees instead of a busted up Culpepper and misses hooking up with Bama
I think Saban was always destined to end back up in college, he couldn’t handle not being able to completely stack the deck in his favor. You can’t process your bad decisions and get a fresh 25 every spring in the NFL.

Drew Brees is a great QB, but Payton is the catalyst behind the Saints success since 2006. It will become more evident once Drew retires and Sean is still able to attain a high level of play at the QB position.

I think part of that what-if is implying Brees wouldn't have had the same success in Miami though, and is acknowledging Brees and Payton are a perfect pairing.

Brees would have went on to have a decent career in Miami but probably not lighting the world on fire like he is by having Payton designing an O around his strengths and weaknesses.
Saban is a tool and would not have done anything more with Brees than he did with Culpepper.

LSU had to sacrifice Nick Saban so that the Saints could get Drew Brees and win a Superbowl.

Brees + Payton is the perfect storm. Each apart would have had very good careers. Together, they are legendary and second to none. Kind of like Kevin Nash and Scott Hall in wresting. Neither was incredible alone, but together as a tag team, The Outsiders, they couldn't be beaten. LOL

Payton wouldn't be here if the raiders didnt turn him down. Everything happens for a reason, the stars aligned for the saints for once.
