Can the post office detect if a counterfeit stamp is used on an envelope?

You never hear about fake stamps being used but maybe it is a thing?

I imagine the OCR systems they use to decifer chicken scratch handwriting for addresses is also capable of detecting fake stamps. They probably just get automatically removed from the sorting system and dumped into a waste bin for shredding.

first of all, who the hell mails something using a stamp? I don't think i've used a stamp in like 10 years. If something requires me to mail it in using a stamp, then it's simply not going to get mailed.
secondly, do you not have 30 whatever cents?
and lastly, it probably cost more to make a counterfeit stamp than it does to buy a real one.

Useless stamp fact -
If you bought the first "Forever Stamp" issued May 14th, 2007, and held onto them for 5 years, your stamp value would have outperformed the S&P 500 index by nearly 10% cumulatively - growing from 41 cents to 45 cents over that stretch.

Actually yes they do. I replied to him asking who mails things anymore. Not who uses stamps anymore.
For the record I use stamps quite often mostly for business purposes.
