On the market for a new car. When is the best time to take advantage of year end pricing?

We are looking to buy my wife a new car. I understand I am costing myself thousands versus buying pre owned but this is a happy wife/happy life scenario. So no need to start by telling me about the folly of buying new off the lot. I get it.
My question is when will I be in the best position to go car shopping? Do we wait until Christmas or New Year or will there be similar opportunities before then? We can afford to be patient so there is no rush.

Compromise - buy a demo.
Still sold as new off the lot, all warranties apply as new, just a few thousand miles, and huge discount.

What difference does timing make if you are making a stupid decision. Just go walk on the lot and buy the car moneybags

But I guess if you are set on doing it, do it in December and most likely after Christmas. The way the end of year calendar shakes out this year they will be dead on the 27th and 28th. Plus you compound the monthly, quarterly and annual sales incentives. Also, they pay taxes on lot value on Jan 1 inventory so they won't turn down a solid offer on a 2018 model with 2019's on the lot.
However if you are looking at a 2019, I can't help you.

The best prices on "current" model year (18) is going to be the leftovers after the calendar year flips, when they're competing with arriving 19 model years in 2019.
That process actually starts next month (if not earlier) at a lot of dealerships, but kind of slides as the 2018 models stick around on the lot unsold - typically "loaded" models that never got bites get heavily discounted during this time (while they desperately try to sell them online), or it is a package that just wasn't popular because it was missing something (or unpopular color) and didn't sell before the year end (or they made too many of a model declining in popularity).

So October will be prime buyer market... I dig it

Find out when the ‘19 models start to arrive, and shop for ‘18 models about that time. That can be as early as August or September for some brands. They’re not gonna give you an ‘18, but they’ll be more motivated to move those last year models.

About two-three years later when it has 30k miles on it and a clear Carfax history.

This^^^ and also the fellow who mentioned demos. My uncle's wife bought a current model year demo Lexus at year end several years ago and got a helluva discount.
One of the mega dealers in my area used to hire people as part-timers just to drive and park their cars in a neighboring county at year end, all to avoid the taxes in the county where the dealership was located. You could snag some really good deals if you weren't overly picky about colors and options.

I think the selection is too limited by that time. Around Oct./Nov., the new model year has been out for a month or two already but there is still a decent selection of the previous model year they are having to dump. By Jan. there isn’t much of an inventory left.

I would take Carfax results with a grain of salt.

What would you use?
I’m in the market for a new truck and trying to decide if it’s better to buy new or used.

The very best time is when the new models are showing up and they are discounting the existing inventory. Toyota is doing this now.

It’s the end of Q3 this month, can get some good deals if you show up in the evening on the 29th

It depends on how specific your wife's needs are with the car. As already stated, the longer you wait to get an '18 model, the better the deal. However, you will also be much more limited on selection.
Has anyone ever tried walking into the dealership, looking at their big board of sales and asking for the salesman at the bottom of the list?

There isn't anything else. That's the fricked up part. Carfax can have wrong information or be missing information, but they don't care.
I had a fabricated wreck on my carfax report when I was trying to sell my car. They won't take it off either. Apparently it's fairly common.
