i guess you can debate the worst ways people died from murderous hoards throughout history, but for sheer volume of numbers killed its not even close. the stalanist purges i think would come in second after the holocost
Nah, actually from sheer numbers mao, Stalin, and a few other dictators in history killed quite a few more than the Holocaust.
The difference IMO is the way in which they were killed, and the reason for which they were killed, which essentially was no reason at all

It's 75 percent recency bias, 15 percent white privilege ( I'm not a white guilter but you don't hear shite about Darfur ) and 10 percent Jewish media bullshite

1) The surviving Nazis actually had to answer for their war crimes in a very public way. Russia and Japan did not. Verified and documented truth is easier to sensationalize than vague rumors that few witnesses stupid enough to lend credibility to.
2) Jewish presence in the media has always kept awareness of the Holocaust high. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it is the truth.
3) Hitler was on the opposite side of the US. We had four years of war propaganda saying he was the devil.
4) Hitler didn't get nuked so we never felt like we balanced the books.

quote:Correct. It was so quick and systematic. No territory was in dispute. They were productive members of society. etc. It was a literal ethnic cleansing. For Stalin and Mao, you can at least argue that there was SOME theoretical underpinning to their atrocities.

The Khmer Rouge should be up there. The smaller numbers are mostly a function of how small the denominator was to start with. But good lord, it was brutal.

I’m not sure watching your people starve to death because you refuse to admit that your political philosophy is a colossal failure is any less justifiable than straight up gassing a race of people.

All those other things were ancient history. Literally. They weren’t seen as crimes at the times. Holocaust was a modern society doing that and was clearly viewed as a crime against humanity

It's an interesting question you raise: did Mao/Stalin believe they were presiding over colossal failures? The USSR at least had something to show for their insanity (e.g. Sputnik and other scientific advancements). My guess is that they did not think they were witnessing failures.

50+million?
Only WW2 and it’s various communist genocides had more

Although even if you did speak out, your arse was dead too.

I think what sets the Holocaust part from other instances of genocide is the industrial nature of it. The Nazis mobilized a massive industrial framework across all of Europe for the sole purpose of mass extermination. If you look at the scale of the efforts put into constructing the whole death camp system, from rounding up people, shipping them en mass across Europe by the tens of thousands at a time , and then exterminating and disposing of millions of bodies, it become overwhelming macabre.
So while there have been other acts of genocide in history that were terrible to behold, none compare to how the Nazis industrialized it and made it into a well oiled machine.

It’s an easier argument for Mao. I think he may have been legitimately insane. When you study the details of the Great Leap Forward, it’s jaw-dropping.

What happened on 1/9/12 was the worst crime in history

Or maybe since we were supposed to be more advanced and cultured it being so recent makes it worse?
I think this makes it more heinous than the others mentioned.

that was a fairy tale intended to control the unwashed masses.
Effective when paired with new fairy tale that you escape gods wrath for all your sins if you "have faith in the power of the blood (sacrifice).
