Getting a Springfield M1A squad with 18” Barrel this weekend and am thinking about slapping a long eye relief scope on it. Depending how it shoots I may use it as my deer rifle this season. Those of you with this gun what kind of accuracy are you getting?

Does the State still have a 5 shot limit on rifles when deer hunting? Doesn't the old M1 Garand hold 8?

That's a big heavy rifle to lug around but it oughta work just fine.

Keep ammo in the 150 - 168gr range, avoid soft points, have fun.

Just my 2 cents but putting a scope on that’s rifle is an abomination. Now I have a Garand and these old eyes and those sights don’t get along so well, but I am not intending to hunt with it. That M1A is a beautiful classic, don’t ruin it, but to each his own.

Took a white-tail here in Texas a couple years ago with one. Its a good gun and I really like .308 for a mid sized animal like a white-tail.

I will say the gun isn’t the most inherently accurate rifle out there. Of course I just have the most basic model Springfield offers, not a match version or anything so there might be more accurate stuff out there. Mine mostly shoots 1.5” groups at 100 yards. So not bad, but not fantastic either, but plenty good to hit a deer at 100-200 yards.
