I have a few guys that bitch and moan when they have to work overtime. Maybe 10 hours tops per week

Then I have about 10+ applications sent in from employees from our competitors sending in applications because they are not getting at least 30 hours/ week where they are currently working and they want to work for us

Business people.. what would you do in my case?

How much does it cost you to train a new hire?

Let new hires know up front that 10+ hrs OT is expected with the position.

Wouldn’t they be happy to have an opportunity to get time and a half? More money in their pocket right?

Fire the main complainer and hire one of those from the stack of apps. It'll send a message that OT isnt something to bitch about. *only works in a right-to-work state where you can up and fire for any reason

Don't hire people too lazy to work. When I needed extra money to support my family. God gave me overtime. It isn't something I wanted. But something I needed. Money don't just fall from the sky. It must be earned. And sometimes it is answer to prayer.

Paid overtime shouldn't be an issue if that's what you refer too.

Now unpaid overtime, that's what makes people upset. Especially if their position was made salaried.

People don't want to be taken advantage of by a cheap company that will not hire enough employees to fill the workload. Lord forbid some people want thier time off to spend with family instead of working for some a-hole like the

I’ll work 20 hours of overtime with a smile on my face.

This is something to consider. My family holds plenipotentiary interest in a certain worldwide petroleum based conglomerate. It costs roughly 80-100K to recruit & train a mid-level hourly employee. You will need to consider how long it will take to recoup that cost in your decision.

Tough situation, but I know if I have an employee who's productive, but a little bitchy from time to time, I deal w/ it and make it work.

Sure, you may get a better employee to come along, but is it worth the risk of losing someone you already know is a good value as an employee?

As far as the applicants go, there may be other reasons, like lack of productivity, that explain those low hours.

Money isn't everything. To a certain extent, my time is more valuable to me than extra money. It's a fine balance.

I have complained about OT before and it is typically because of short notice and/or disrupting my family schedule.

If a typical week is balanced on my ability to pick up the kids from daycare by X time, which is 15 minutes before they start charging $1 / child / minute, of course I will be upset at an extra 2hr a day.
