Saturday night, I told myself I wouldn't re-watch that shitshow. Apparently I like lying to myself.

Anyway, I found some interesting stats.

Run/Pass ratio of plays called was 51%/49% (28 runs/27 passes)

We only ran 55 offensive plays. This is bad. I can't remember the number from the Miami game, but it was very low as well. Maybe like 65.

52% of our pass plays, we sent 4 or 5 receivers out
30% of our pass plays, we sent 3 receivers out.
18% of our pass plays, we sent 2 receivers out.

71% (5/7) of the time we lined up with 2 wide, we only sent two receivers out.

I counted 2 times that Burrow held the ball too long. On one, we had 4 receivers out and we had 3 on the other. I didn't see him hold the ball excessively on any of the 5 passing plays where we only sent two receivers out.

What's it all mean? I have no idea, other than we weren't in "max protect" all night.

Who said anything about negatigers? After watching the game, I would have sworn we were in Max protect all night. Am I a negatiger?

I was just trying to put some stats out there. Not trying to politicize anything here.

On those 2 receiver routes, if the te's and rb stay in and block, that's max protect.

Right. On 18% of our passing plays (5/27), only 2 receivers went out.

We lined up in two wide receiver sets 7 times. But on one of those we sent 4 guys out and the other time we sent 3.

Good job

That said....we threw the ball way too much considering we were up 24-0 at half.

I think they could still execute other plays that could offset the blitz/pass rush instead of max protect. Screens(middle rb, slip and bubble), draws and counters.
The thing about 2te, 2wr and rb personnel that we were running is, you also have to be successful running out of that formation for the defense to respect the play action and if you're not they will just pin their ears back and come after you. That's why the draws and screens would be successful.

In the second half, we only called 5 pass plays out of 15 total plays.

In the first half, we were 45%/55% favoring the pass.

I'm not sure what you're thinking here. We were hardly ever even in max protect. 5 plays the entire game.

1) PA Pass, corner route Jefferson, incomplete clean pocket. Poor throw (out of bounds & looked late). The play action was very effective. It sucked everyone in and Jefferson was 1 on 1 on the outside.

2) PA rollout incomplete to Jefferson, ball looked late. Credit SLU DB with a pass breakup.

3) Quick pass to Sullivan for 16 yards (somehting like 12 yards after catch)

4) Burrow had all day and was able to wait for Marshall to come open across the middle for 8 yards

5) Burrow looked to throw a quick pass to Jefferson on the left, but the DB played it well. JB rolled right and threw to Chase for 3 yards.

Never said we did it a lot, what I'm thinking is, exactly what I said. We need to run more screens and draws(along with a few other things) to offset blitz/pass rush.

14 plays were 12 personel or 11 personel and had 2 receiver / 3 receiver routes, respectively, which means max protection on 52% of the plays. Keeping your TE(s) and RB in to block means max protect.

I stand corrected.

Two adds; not really seeking answers, just a wandering mind:
- how many of that 18% resulted in punts, and were they consecutive plays?
- please involve RBs in passing game.

This points to WRs not getting it done. I'd theorize that they aren't coming back to ball when Burrow is under pressure (the usual cause of QB not being able to find anyone on the run).

I count 12, including the one play we passed out of 21.

Rewatching it now, just finished the 1st half. Offense looks fine so far. Burrow making good decisions, SELA is playing a lot of cover 3 with their CBs 10 yards off our WRs and we are taking advantage by hitting hitches & quick outs. A few missed blocks here & there by the OL and TE/FB. SELA is quick off the ball for a FCS team. Interested to see what changed in the 2nd half.

Lester Earl had a really good thread that showed the different mixtures of WRs they played on all of these series. It was a little bewildering how scatter brained it seemed.

I think they may have been using that game to evaluate combos of WRs they want on the field. You'd think they might have that sorted out already but if they learned something from that game that can benefit us in bigger games then so be it.

Most of the problems were in the first half. We only ran 15 plays in the second half. There's really no big protection issues after the first drive, after we got backed up with the bogus chop block call.

Even if the chip then go out, the play will still take longer to unfold and give burrow less options.

I appreciate the research though. The 52% in 4 wide doesn't make sense but I'll take your word on it.

4 and 5 receivers going out. The majority of these were 3 receiver sets where the TE/RB went out in the pattern.

We lined up in 4 WR sets 5 times, one of which was the hail Mary.

I didn't notice a back/tight end chipping and then going out, and I would not have counted that as a receiver in the route. There were a couple of times where the back/tight end either carried out a fake and drifted out, or realized the man he was assigned to block wasn't rushing and drifted out in the pattern. I didn't count either of these scenarios.
