LSU Colorguard has included male members (and rifles) in the past.
You are technically correct.....there were male color guard members. However, they were added as rifles (occasionally did flag). It was a shortlived experiment. Rifles went away and so did males.

We can’t allow Golden Girls and Tiger Girls cat fighting in public.
I think they need me to be an impartial judge in a private showdown of their individual talents!
The things I’ll do for my alma mater!

It appears that the new directors want to take Tiger Band away from their traditional corps style toward a more "show band" style similar to what you see in DCI competitions
since tiger band moved away from military style, it has been a textbook college band. those bands performed shows that were not dissimilar to 80's dci shows with significantly less difficulty. now, there is a trend in college bands, started mainly at ohio st, to have gimmicks in the show which i find quite entertaining and refreshing. exactly what a college band should be - lighthearted.
contemporary dci shows are NOTHING like that at all. you won't see a corps forming the shape of superman flying out of a phone booth or a tank rolling across the field firing a projectile.
what the new directors are bringing is a very welcome change, seems to be well received and is in line with trendsetters.
quote:i wouldn't say this is the case. i was sitting front and center last night and tiger band sounded as good as i have ever heard them. the sound was phenomenal. i can assure you no college band is going to top that. it was as good as a college band is going to get and i say that from significant experience in the profession.
opposing bands routinely drown out Tiger Band

quote:after? my word that was a STAPLE of their show design along with every other college band cliche; waterfall, follow the leader, drumline elevator drill. completely stale, unimaginative, lazy, etc. the new staff has really breathed new life into the shows.
the "park and play" shows that became so common after Wickes and Moorehouse left.

quote:i'm not in rehearsals every day but, judging from the sound on display last night, the talent is definitely still there. they sounded incredible. i would totally not be surprised if tiger band could not maintain their typical high level of quality sound because it's just a college band. but, it has not waned yet.
it does appear that the talent is going away from the band

We sit in section 212 and have never had problems hearing the band until about 2 years ago. They are definitely not as powerful as they used to be. You can look at them and see there is less brass than in years past. Count the number of tubas. There are about half of what Tiger Band usually has.
Last season, I sat with friends in the south endzone a couple of times and the band did not sound strong, despite the fact that we were pretty much directly across from them. When I’m in my usual seats in 212 and Auburn or Bama brings their full band, they are all I hear.

quote:i did notice that last night. i counted 20. down from about 32 a few years ago. noticeable difference. however, the quality has remained undiminished. if there are less people auditioning, they are doing a good job of maintaining a quality product commensurate with what is available.
Count the number of tubas

The problem is the current Golden Band directors have no clue how to design or teach what Ohio State does. The Golden Band attempts to imitate Ohio State but does not come close. The result is a "half-baked" product. The fans who sit in my area of the stadium are already tired of this "new & improved" approach to the halftime shows. Consider this, making pictures on the field is actually "very old." It was commonplace in the 60's & 70's. Wickes, Moorhouse & King also made pictures (tanks, marching soldiers, etc) from time to time. But the mixed it up with corps style.
Instrumentation......try recruiting better. That's how Wickes, Moorhouse & King did it. That's how they were cutting around 100 every year just to get to 325. Now they can't even get 325 to show up. Not good for the future.

1. According to you. Before the current regime, the band received countless awards and recognition. What awards have they received?
quote:

2. Watch videos of each and get back to me. BTW...take a look at velocity.

yes, but still entertaining and refreshing compared to the stale, lazy approach that most college bands, including tiger band, had for 3 decades.
3. Refer to #1 above.

4. Really? Deciding to be leaner? This is clear BS. With incomplete instrumentation, the sound of the band cannot be as good with previous directors. 20 tubas versus 32 tubas makes a big difference.
Bottom line....the band has declined in numbers and talent. They used to cut around 100 just to get down to 325. Now, they take whatever walks in the door and still can't make 325!!

quote:no. according to reality. at no point have they failed to execute a show.
According to you
quote:those awards are fun but, seriously? no objectivity whatsoever. it's like giving picasso an award over rothko. i'm not saying tiger band did not deserve the award. i'm talking about the nature of the award itself. they aren't really objective standards
What awards have they received?
quote:i have. they're basically identical.
Watch videos of each and get back to me
quote:i don't know if you understand symmetrical drill, elevator drill, waterfall, follow the leader, etc. if you did, you would know how lazy/uneducated linda and co were as drill designers. i get the impression i'm talking to someone who has never worked in the profession.
Refer to #1 above
frank and linda knew very little about marching band. they knew the minimum and that's how they were able to execute the simplest, most elementary shows. of course frank had a professional knowledge of good sound quality but, he was blessed with more majors because of the money. he was blessed with marty hurley's influence in south louisiana which gave him a competent drumline. linda knew the basics of dance and color guard. there's your tiger band history. i think you're romanticizing them a bit.
quote:who said this is the case?
With incomplete instrumentation
quote:yet it is.
the sound of the band cannot be as good with previous directors
quote:maybe. maybe not. you can have 20 high quality players that can have a better sound and volume than 32 weaker players. this is why tiger band was always superior to other college bands - more music majors than others. there were more music majors because tiger band paid more than others. now, others have caught up and are paying more
20 tubas versus 32 tubas makes a big difference
