Not concerned with cutting 3 draft picks

This is the benefit of some great previous draft classes and hits in free agency. All 3 would be excellent practice squad candidates also. Leonard would be my choice if I could pick 1
To take the next step this year, Davenport and Smith were going to be the only guys to make an impact anyway. And Boston Scott appears to be competent and Clapp looks like a 7th round steal.

They were 4th, 5th, and 6th rounders. 5th round on get cut more often than kept league wide.
4ths are more 50/50, but not that surprising.
But Leonard was surprising to me because of who we kept instead. As long as we can PS it's still not a wasted pick as he was a project from jump.
Jamerson and Moore were victims of being at crowded positions and not as good (yet) as the options ahead of them. But again they were 5th and 6th rounders.
You cannot compare this draft to last year's. We had 2 firsts and 3 thirds (and our second). The one late pick is the only one who is gone.
This year we kept our first and third rounder, and both have looked like very good picks.
And we also kept Scott and Clapp, and Scott at the least looks like he'll make some impact this year.

All three guys were over drafted by at least a round according to the draft gurus

A few surprises, but the draft pick cuts are an indication of the quality depth this year. That has not always been the case.
The final is far from over while the staff reviews all the cuts & there will be another move when Ingram returns.

Maybe they'll all fly under the radar on the PS.
But I don't think we're THAT stacked and deep that we can just lose half our draft picks before the season even begins and not feel the consequences later.

Picks aren't always about year one, so if we can keep them they are far from a waste. They all seemed to be on track, just stuck behind vets on a deep roster.
And again, these are second half of the draft picks, not early picks. It's not like we're cutting the top half. Most late picks league wide don't make it past a couple of years, and if these guys are brought back then they aren't wasted picks.

That's three picks that could have been used on a potential TE.

Name me a 4th round (from the spot we took Leonard) or later TE that did jack in preseason and I'll listen.

I'd imagine at least 2/3 go on PS

Dan Arnold is going to be a player.

Leopard is a disappointment on several angles. It was known that the was a talent, but a project who would take some time. More time than camp.
However, you drafted a project with little room on this roster to take one on. Having just signed a vet tackle (bushrod) it was a strange pick. A project is not going to be better than a vet in camp.
Just a weird thought process from draft to cut day with this prospect.

we didn't have a 2nd rounder so our "early picks" are really just Davenport

yeah it really doesn't make any logical sense
that thread bragging on leonard from a few days ago looks really silly today

I was counting third round in that. Should have said top "half".
And you seem to have missed the point of that statement. The picks we cut weren't early picks. That has jack to do with who or how many early picks we had.

What people seem to be missing is that the number of rookies that are cut is not always a reflection of the quality of the players, it can also be a reflection of how talented and deep the roster is. This is a really deep Saints team.

Right. Instead of people praising how we found a gem last year in Maulet as an UDFA, they curse that we cut Jamerson.
And Jamerson may not be gone. He can still land on the PS if not claimed. And cutting him isn't necessarily a reflection of his skills. We have vets and second year guys that know the system better right now. If Jamerson makes the PS, next year HE may be the reason we are cutting next year's pick.

Why does no one call Jamerson and Moore “projects”? Both were drafted by the saints to play different positions than what they played in college.

I guess it's more understood 5th round on is full of projects, special teamers, and low ceiling guys.
4th round you can usually still find players of a higher quality, but not always (depends on the depth of the draft).
