Although I do use mine (gas) I’ll use that before I use the central heat.

I have a wood burning fireplace in my den and sue the shite out of it. I’m within a year from adding one to an outdoor living area also. As a matter of fact, I’ve already purchased a cord of wood for this fall and winter with a half cord or so left from last year.

No better feeling than waking up on a cold Sunday morning, taking that first sip of hot coffee, looking out the window as sunrise glistens off the frost-covered grass, and then your wife says shes freezing and wants you to go outside and haul in a bunch of wood to build her a fire

I burn a cord or close to it every winter
the fireplace is my favorite thing in the house

Mine’s mounted above the fireplace and I have zero issue with this. They also make wall mounts that come out and down to lower the viewing angle.

Fireplaces are used to destroy the evidence

Is that what the fireplace salesman told you?

because they cost around $1k to add but add $10k to the value of the house because it has a fireplace

Never met a fireplace salesman before. Sounds like an easy job though. Fireplaces add value to homes, and the difference in our living room with and without the fireplace is night and day.

I have a wood burning stove... one of the new EPA rated kind. Burns very clean, very little smoke. I love it... It will heat my entire house.

Exactly my point. This may look good on a wall by itself, but who actually has a room designed around staring at the fireplace?

it's only a few times a year, but i love using my fireplace.
Something about reclining in the chair, feeling the heat on your toes when you can see it is cold outside is so relaxing.

My house doesn’t have one. It rarely gets cold enough to be able to use one, but I miss not having it.

When will I ever use it?
Probably during the winter when it’s cold numbnuts

Anytime you would turn on the heater is when you would use it. Which is plenty. And even a gas fireplace is more energy efficient than heating the entire house.
Regardless of use or need, it’s a nice amenity. Who uses a dining room? How often do people use the giant freestanding tub that’s next to the shower that they use everyday? Why have granite countertops when Formica does the job? Why have ceilings over 7’ high? It’s just wasted space. If you are looking at a house from a strictly logical, functional standpoint the fireplace is way down the list.

Light candles in it. It's a nice aesthetic.

Most houses here in FL have them to and it drove me nuts when I was house shopping.
Bought a house though that had one and I ripped it out to create a huge great room.
Much better use of space.
