With the duck hunting season a few weeks away, Louisiana wildlife managers are urging hunters not to move roseau cane, in an effort to avoid spreading a foreign pest that's decimating Louisiana's coastal wetlands.

The state declared an emergency quarantine for an Asian scale insect and the roseau cane the insect targets, a hardy marsh plant that's of vital importance in the lower Mississippi River Delta.

Duck hunters frequently use the cane to conceal their hideouts, known as blinds. Hunters sometimes harvest cane stalks from marshes, take them home and then transport them to a blind at a third location. This may give the scale the opportunity to spread to several areas. Fragments of cane may also be moved by hunters' boats.

"The rate at which (the scale) seems to be expanding and the severity of its impacts is alarming," the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said in a statement.

There’s no way in hell that hunters will stop using it or transporting it short distances, but they may have a chance asking people to not relocate it to other totally different areas. They should ask all the marinas to do what BSM did last year which is not allow you to launch with bundles of cane.

This is next to impossible to solve. Hopefully it’s not nearly as likely to spread the stuff this way.

Man there are some real idiots in this state. That stuff is the greatest vegetation you can hope for when trying to blind in. I’m all for taking intelligent measures to stop the spread of the scale tho if it’s really as bad as advertised.

Well, I'm not surprised. We have some real morons in this state. They don't realize that that pesky plant is the only reason we have marsh in some parts of the state. Lose that, and guess what? You have that much less duck habitat.

Is the state also going to send out the alert to seagulls, pelicans, herons, spoonbills, dove, etc. because that's who is now responsible for carrying this insect all over the marsh from Texas to Florida. There is absolutely no way to stop it and the state should have started a year ago planting the invasive cane which is immune to these insets to offset the loss of the Roseau cane.

How does the state intend on controlling the spread of the insect too when high tides caused by stiff southerly winds take it north. Sadly there is no way to stop the spread of this insect.

agreed, declare it as a quarantined plant and simply pout a ban on possession or transport of it anywhere within state boundaries

I’m not a fan of it either, but it does serve some soil stabilization value. And hunting in Venice was a breeze with the stuff everywhere.

Venice won’t survive as we are used to without it. It’s a must IMO to try and keep it.

Making blinds will get harder and harder. I ha e been scouring the internet for fake willow trees no luck yet but sooner or later.....
