Yes. Like most do. Let the player throw a fit and they’ll get over it and back into the match.

The first penalty should never have been called. I haven’t checked yet to see if Serena said she saw the coach. I know the coach said he was coaching. Doesn’t mean Serena saw or acknowledged or didn’t already know what to do. There was no need for a warning.

She knew she had a warning already.

It is HER fault for continuing her actions.

The referee did not make her break her racket.

The referee did not make her continue yelling at him.

She did all that herself.

Her.

Stop excusing HER actions.

She was staring at the box. He motions her/coaches her. She suddenly starts doing exactly what he said to do. But she says she never got the message. Right. Then again, the coach said he coaches every match as every coach does. But defiant Serena says she has no clue what her coach is talking about that she has never had coaching.

The coach said he is honest. I believe him. I don’t believe Serena.

And even if she didn’t see it, her team broke the rules. If the coach is cheating, I’m fine with the player being penalized. But again, it was a WARNING to stop what he admitted he as doing. And the warning was necessary as the coach admitted he was breaking the rules. He just tried to justify his actions by saying everyone cheats.

No it isn’t. The coach motioned with his hands in the box

That happens 10,000 times a tournament. I doubt Serena could even see him

at people downvoting this just because they hate Serena. This is absolutely true.

He motioned her to come forward. After he made the motions, she suddenly starting to come to the net...which she had not done all match. She clearly saw him.

He admits he was coaching like he always does. She claims she has never had coaching and she has no idea what her coach is talking about. She's worse than Urban Liar.

And again, I'm saddened that anyone would defend her actions.

People drive drunk all the time. That doesn't make it right or an excuse to be let off once you get caught. Rules are rules. You break the rules, you pay the price. And to claim this umpire did it because she is a women is asinine. ESPN showed this umpires history. He has penalized Murray, Nadal, and Venus. There are rules. You break the rules. Take personal responsibility and deal with the consequences and stop blaming others.

Shriver, Fernandez, and Chris E should be ashamed of themselves for their post match commentary.

Its a shame how Chris E continues to suck up to Serena. She will take up for her for anything. She could burn the locker room down to the ground and Chris E would say its the tournaments fault for not making everything fire proof...

Its embarrassing at times and even a little creepy. When Serena threatened to kill the linesman there 10 years ago and said she would knock the tennis ball down her throat, she even took up for her then.

Just sad what has happened to people. .

Comparing it to driving drunk is a little over the top, but I get what you’re saying.

People get coached all the time. I think it just seemed absurd to Serena that she was getting called on it there. She was way out of line, but I also think the reaction on this board if Federer or Nadal pulled the same stuff she did would be completely different.

I get the umpire’s decision making, but I also think he should have warned Serena he was about to dock her a game instead of just giving it to Osaka.

What does it matter. Are you so caught up in her that you believe the coach was sending signals that she did not know what they were? In order for hand signals to work, both parties have to know what they are. Of course she said she didnt see them. He was just giving her a thumbs up.

I think some of you will defend people for anything no matter what. She was being coached. The damn coach admitted it.

So do you honestly think that at the end if the umpire would have warned her with a game penalty, she would have just shut up? You cant be that blind

She would have exploded. She had every chance to temper herself and she didnt. Him threatening her with a game penalty would have just made things worse. She was not going to shut up under any circumstance. She got caught and got beat and she just could not handle that

The way she kept going at the judge and crying and demanding an apology after completely lying to him about her coach not coaching was as cringey as it gets.

It was like she had some sort of complex and her mind was stuck in some loop of "I'm better than everyone and if you wrong me you must bow down."

I thought giving her the game was ridiculous watching live. But after watching video of her going at the guy every time she'd go the her bench, I'm glad she got it.

She
Would
Not
Stop

I don’t think she would have. You’re right. She probably would have exploded and some people would still have defended her.

I’m not defending her. I think she was very out of line. There are some people that are going to defend her regardless of what she does because of how much they love her. The same thing applies on the other end. There are people who hate Serena so much they’re only finding fault with her.

I think there’s fault with both of them.

She's always been really immature and had some borderline personality disorder issues. The past few years it seemed to have gotten better. She started to learn to say all the right things. I thought she grew up from the old line judge incident. Apparently not. It's too bad because she is near the end now, and people aren't going to forget this stuff.

I think he should have definitely looked her dead in the face and said, "Serena I appreciate your passion but I'm going to have to take a game if you continue to come at me ANY longer."

Just to keep everything 100% transparent.

Seriously. The USTA should not have to coddle a player that has as much experience as her. She is a professional who has been down this road before. They dont have to apologize to her for her own bad actions. Jesus Christ.

If Federer acted that way the whole sports world would take notice. But he doesn't act like a little bitch, the dude is all class
