YOU PLAY THE POSITION YOU DEFEND!!!
This is meant for everyone to see - not addressing to any one person.
AD hasn't played a ton of 5, even when he has been next to "power forwards"
Ryno covered Cousins, for example when they played the Kings.
Randle and Niko will defend more "big centers" than AD this year. Just like Ryno did in years past.
I don't know why this is so confusing for the national media, and even some local people to understand.

right, exactly
which is why its so aggravating to see/hear the "wear & tear" argument about davis. theres nothing left to protect him from...

So more than anything the lineup changes based on who you play, I think.
No one is saying Davis shouldn't play or defend the 5 in the regular season, it will happen. But anytime Davis is on the court with Randle, Okafors x2, Diallo, (and sometimes even Niko) Davis will obviously slot to the 4, whatever that even means these days.

D accepting the role of center is huge. Had they not traded for Boogie he’d have dragged a lineup that included Hill, Cunningham and Galloway/rookie Buddy to the playoffs. You can build a good defense around Jrue and AD.
AD didn’t really change his mind on how he wants to play or defend. We just acquired a frontcourt partner who can space on offense while also able to defend 5’s and rebound. AD has always just needed/wanted to play with a 4 who can guard big and rebound.

98% of people (probably more) don't know what they are talking about. They hear a narrative who probably got that narrative from another misinformed person and the cycle goes on and on.
AD is startin. Next to Niko. And AD will cover the more agile guy on opposing teams front court. Niko will defend the more stationary one. Thats how the coaching staff does it.
Novice people talk about "positions" ... People who really know the game never do (except to explain things to a novice)
Its about skill sets. Davis isn't covering the "power forward" or the "center"... he is covering the more active big man on the opposing team and/or the one who is more of a playmaker. Example -- He will defend Jokic or M Gasol, guys novices will call "centers" because the coaching staff wants to use him to disrupt the opposing offense with his length and activity.

Generous number. And I include myself in that clueless group
What is even more curious with the Davis stuff is that teams often aren't eager to have him act as primary defender on PnR. Hes just going to beat any big he faces most of the time. And can stay with guards
So they go after Mirotic, who competes and understands the scheme, but has physical limits. That allows Davis to sit back and protect the paint like a traditional 5 even as he guards a more skilled, perimeter-phile big

As long as AD stays closer to the rim on defense, like he did post boogie, I don’t care who he defends.

But Michael is it that black and white?
Does it make sense for AD to chase the more mobile player out to the 3 point line when we would have either Niko or Randle protecting the rim?
We know that both Randle and Niko have the foot speed to do so.
Maybe it will be a bit of both, except Davis will never match up against the physical post players.
Not arguing just wondering.

I've been saying for a year that y'all are a better team without Boogie.

If we had rondo I’d be very confident in this team being really good
Payton is a guy I wanted on this team, but mainly to learn behind rondo. I hope the pace brings the best out of him.

Yep, no matter his performance during the regular season, Rondo will be missed.
BUT, I do think we could see AD take this season as the opportunity to cement his place
In the NBA firmament

I will be happy with 40+ wins. I am still afraid of us not closing games, that was something Rondo helped with a lot. Hopefully Jrue or AD can take over in the 4th and we can get some "bullshite" superstar calls for us.

Rondo wasn't on the floor at the end of many games I watched.
