Here's a new article from The Ringer on AD and the Pelicans. Some insight on how good the AD/Mirotic pairing was last season, and how AD will/can become a leader for the younger guys on the team.

Imagine if the Pelicans had been on the other side of the West bracket last season. Davis could have done the same things to the Rockets that he did to the Blazers. He would have been too much for Clint Capela to handle, and he has the length and foot speed to at least force James Harden and Chris Paul into tougher shots off the dribble.

AD accepting the role of center is huge. Had they not traded for Boogie he’d have dragged a lineup that included Hill, Cunningham and Galloway/rookie Buddy to the playoffs. You can build a good defense around Jrue and AD.

We actually could be better, or at least win more games. And to repeat the obvious, if by some miracle, the Pels add a solid wing, they could make some real noise.

Gentry may keep him at the 4 in the regular season to save wear and tear on his body, but the coach will move his superstar to the 5 in the playoffs, where he is essentially unstoppable.

this line of thinking though aggravates me...who are the centers left that will put "wear & tear" on davis, at the 5?

he's bigger than capela
gasol? nurkic? adams maybe?

we have randle now who can post up on offense, and ease the burden on davis at the end of the shot clock

The big-bodied centers may be able to bang with him, but he will absolutely destroy them on the other end. Pairing him with Mirotic will likely render most of those guys useless. Pairing him with Randle effectively negates the issue.

Randle fits us better, but I’m notnsold on Payton over Rondo.

If Payton clicks, we will absolutely be better. Rondo wasn’t all world during the regular season but what he did off the court is more valuable than what he did on the court.

It's the actual 82 games of it more than individual players.

Thats the issue. Not actual players. When it comes to playoffs, he will play the 5. But reducing the risk and wear during the regular season is a smart move.

I’m just not getting the difference in wear and tear at 4 vs 5 for him.
we don’t have a center that can play major minutes anyway so it’s likely not relevant, but nearly all Davis lineups with another big man have been mediocre (cousins excepted but he’s a different kind of player)

I mean you essentially are still saying it on the site. We all know what word you're saying and it's not like you're substituting it with another word.

Will preface this by saying the game has changed a ton and playing the 5 most nights isn't what it used to be.

That said, even in the today game 5s generally make some type of body contact on every possession on both sides of the court, in part because of boxing out for rebounds, where a lot of contact, both purposeful and incidental, happens.

Over 82 games its can add up and even though ADs injury issues are wayyyyyy overblown, why risk it with him, especially when you have other bigs that can/maybe/hopefully give you great minutes, especially again lesser competition in the regular season.

so, who's the center if they start niko/davis/moore?

when they sub, do we really want davis on the court when okafor 1.0 or 2.0 is out there? when is he going to rest?

where are these minutes with davis at the 4 going to come from, now that boogie is gone?

The Drummonds and Jordans of the world can be pretty intense for AD. I know he plays well against Detroit, but he’s still banging with some big bodies.
