Are you seriously trying to compare a single suicide attempt to life long addictions?


Also...former alcoholics can get a liver transplant. They have to meet certain criteria (specific amount of time of being sober, etc).

Our little town in TN has a girl just like this. It’s a really sad story, she was bullied online and shot herself in the face/head. For months people everywhere had blue bows tied to their trees and pictures of this girl in their yards with the slogan “pray for Alyssa”. Well, she survived and she’s blind and horribly disfigured. Her parents asked people to take down the pictures because they were a reminder of how beautiful she was.

At least she doesn’t remember any of what happened before she woke from a coma.

Yeah she will be able to have a huge impact as a counselor imo. I would imagine it could be a very fulfilling job for her, knowing that something good could come out of her experience.

Again...I would imagine that patient went through an extensive psych evaluation before they agreed to let her be a candidate. They know this will receive world wide attention. Last thing they want is the patient to attempt suicide again after receiving the transplant.

If they thought she was suicidal again..I'm pretty sure they would have rejected her as a transplant candidate...just like they would reject an alcoholic that wasn't in recovery, etc.

I had been waiting for this to make its way here.

My family have been friends with the Stubblefield's for nearly a decade. Katie was and is a very sweet girl who made an insanely stupid impulsive choice. It has been an incredible journey full of every emotion imaginable. We met them through school where her mother taught first grade. My wife volunteered to be her room mom the year my daughter was in her class. Katie went to the same school but was in a much higher grade (k-12 school). She and her sister would babysit my kids occasionally and was always very fun loving and upbeat.

Her suicide attempt could not have been foreseen by anyone as it was immediately after a breakup of her boyfriend.. She regrets that attempt every waking moment.

I always look for the positives in a negative and there are many here. Whether it be by bringing people closer or helping future victims of facial trauma find a better life, there is always a silver lining regardless of the situation.

I imagine the overwhelming majority of teen suicide attempts are the result of impulsive reactions following some event(s)

So we can give up on those that are addicted or those that remain suicidal (some of the most needy in our society), but not those trying to better themselves. That’s an interesting concept and very articulate. How do we apply that to the remainder of our society, i.e., welfare recipients?
