Each drop should be 20 pushups and 100 jugs machine catches in a a row without a drop.

Shouldn't they do something that works on hand strength if the point is to not drop the ball?

WTF you want them to do, squeeze a stress ball?

You clearly never played sports. Of course they didn't mean to drop them. But the pushups absolutely increases your focus. Negative reinforcement works. You get tired during football practice. Tiredness causes lack of focus and discipline. "Fatigue makes cowards of us all". Now you will sound a little less foolish on a sports message board.

Some people just dont understand it has nothing to do with the physical activity but more to do with the mental aspect of "ownership" of one's mistakes.

I heard an interview with a recently retired NFL safety and the interviewer jokingly said that 'bad hands' are why they play defense. The safety mentioned that it's much easier to catch as a WR when you are running a designed route that you've practiced countless times with the ball falling into your hands versus running at full speed to make a big tackle (with eyes focused on a shifty WR) and then unexpectedly have the ball fly in your direction.

He probably explained it a little better but there were a few plays last year (NFL & college) where I could understand what he was saying.

Yea, how about they have to catch a certain amount of balls out of the ball machine after they drop a pick.

Its not about the push ups. Push ups are just a convenient way of bringing focus to a players mind. They have been trained in the proper technique and given drills and exercises to strengthen their hands. They need focus and motivation. When you have a consequence, no matter how trivial, it brings attention to your failure. It brings attention to your lack of focus and preparation. Asking an athlete to do push ups or any type of exercise is like asking a bird to fly. It is not punishment it is a quick and efficient way of acknowledging a mistake and moving on. If you are any kind of team player, the last thing you want is for the rest of your teammates to see that you are not ready. Even more effective is for the team to have to pay the price instead of the one that failed to perform. These types of training tools are about tapping into a players character and inner motivation and that is the only thing that will ever change mistakes or lack of focus.

a friend of mine in the know says that sometimes the coaches yell at the players for missed assignments, lack of discipline. actually raise their voices and single the player out. this cant be good for morale or confidence. we need to be building the players up.

It’s about focus, not ability to catch. Punishment is a way to instill in players to maintain focus. I’m not even that old (33) and we damn sure ran poles in baseball if we made an error. Same rule applies here

Players do push ups after every drop.

Too lenient. Let them have a burger instead of a steak after a drop.

Lol I bet my bank account im 3x as athletic as your sorry arse. Dropping a pass just happens and it has nothing to do with not being focused. Youre going to tell me all these pros who drop interceptions are not focused when they are fighting to make a team? If any of you were athletes you would know the pushups after a drop is bullshite and a decent athlete realizes their mistake without that garbage pledge bullshite.

Nobody said drops never happen. But dropping 5 interceptions on Saturday and over 20 the last two years is a lack of focus and discipline is needed to help correct the problems. The training habits you practice you take on the field with you. The Navy Seals use the same methods of pushups, running, or carrying large amount of weight to help build chemistry and focus on the goals at hand. So I bet my bank account your soft and didn't try very hard in sports or you would understand what makes a man and makes a boy in society.

You are clearly not worth responding to any longer re: your OP. However, this intrigues me. What does this even mean?
