I found out that Mr. Thom Barber, the former logic/philosophy teacher from BRHS, passed away this past Sunday. He was one of the best and coolest teachers I ever had. A very interesting guy who had some funny stories. He retired only a couple of years ago, and had been teaching there since the late 70’s. Anyone here remember him?

I took him for both logic and philosophy. He was a really great teacher and person and was legendary.

He was just one of those rare teachers that you always remember. He actually gave a shite about his students. Just some things I remember:

- The Darth Vader doll
- The rubber duck
- The ball of plaster that he would make you write an essay about if you crossed him.
- The story about the brick that fell of the truck
- The story about the frog and the well.
- The time I pissed him off a bit and I had to write an essay about the use of hay in World War I.
- Letting us watch Monty Python Holy Grail on the last day of school.
- He smoked like a chimney and kept cartons of Camel cigarettes in his desk.
- If A implies B and B is true, therefore A has to be true.

My favorite teacher in high school and probably the most influential person from that period in my life. I've missed him and his classes ever since I graduated.

Makes me sad to think more kids won't get the opportunity to learn from him.

What, when were you there? While every school has a mix of good and bad teachers, in the 80s, 90s, and I'm guessing at least most of the early 2000s, BRHS was regarded as having maybe the best high school faculty in the state.

lol. we had teachers calling us cotton picking ni**ers, one who never showed a film in TV/film, but talked about the weather.
one teacher would talk about WWE the whole time if you got him off topic. So students asked him bout it every class

Also, one threw a stapler at a student and he bled. she finally retired.
Im sure you had the misogynistic one. You know who Im talking about? He said he had 3 sons and 1 mistake! He said Chris Brown was doing the lord's work!

But RIP Mr. Barber

Thanks for the notice, Fonzie...Mr. Barber was a good guy, a really great human. I had him for Logic. He made us really think. He had no kids of his own so I think he kind of adopted us all. My folks divorced during high school and when it got ultra shitty he said "Hey man, I am here for you, whatever you need. Money, whatever."

Former students always came back to visit him even though they were in college. As a high schooler, I just thought that was the coolest damn thing.

The human race needs more like him. I never said it before but I really appreciated you, Thom. Rest in peace.

I had one teacher there that moved the class outside because it was so nice. She said she would be right back and we all watched her walk to her car, get in and drive off. She never came back.
