As said, I don't think it matters a whole lot. You basically have poppers and you have your walk the dog topwaters. I'd just get one of each in a fairly neutral color.

I personally prefer walking the dog as they are a little faster to cover more water and you generally keep tension on the line more of the time. The issue with poppers is right after you pop it the line goes slack for a second. If they hit it then, you have a slack line and its tougher to set the hook.

Needless to say, its mostly just about throwing them and finding when they want to hit a topwater. Nothing better than a topwater strike.

Todd Masson just did a comparison video on the most popular topwater baits in So La. Good little video. He also did one on soft plastics.

I think he should remove price from the evaluation criteria. If I'm throwing topwater, I dont care if it costs $3 or $23. I already spend plenty on getting out there so I want the bait that will catch the most fish. Also, weighting sound the same as workability is nonsense. Loud baits are good and bad depending on the day. Sometimes you want a loud bait, sometimes some noise is good and sometimes no noise is the answer.

Idk, there's no perfect rating and I appreciate the videos. You can draw your own rankings from the video I think.

yeah not even looking at the numbers I like the order. obviously on a perfectly calm day there are better options than the she dog.

I just go with what I have to throw.
If it is a she-dog or Rebel jumping minnow I try to change up actions every few cast to see what they want.

I actually tore trout on $2.99 academy h20 lure popper.
They would still hit rebel jumping minnow just not as aggressive.
They wanted the walk the dog action with twitch to move the feathers on the tail hook.

It is just fun and exciting to see the fish hit the lure.
I love when they hit it from the side to so call kill the lure and come back to eat it.

I ended up buying a She Dog (silver with black top and orange belly). The tackle shop I went to didn’t have many options.

I watched some Youtube videos showing how to “walk the dog,” and now I just need to practice tying a loop knot (I’ve never used that before).

Thanks for all the suggestions!

You could just add a split ring instead.

I fish top water 95% of the time, early-late and the middle of the day. I have just about all the lures mentioned in earlier posts and have caught fish on all of them. My favorite top water lure is the 7M Mirrolure. The secret is to make a little splat noise that imitates the sound of a fish feeding on the top. Find out how the trout wants the retrieve, fast or slow. Vary your retrieves. You'll be surprised how slow they want the retrieve. Lately, when the sea breeze kicks in, I've been going to a Super Spook to make more racket on top.

I use a 6 1/2 foot medium/heavy rod on a 3000 Shimano filled to capacity with Sufix 832, 20 pound 6 pound mono equiv braid. I ALLWAYS us a about 2 1/2 fee of 20 pound florocarbon shock leader. I use a uni to uni knot for the leader to braid and a loop knot on the lure. Having the right line for long, smooth casts insures you are keeping that lure in the water. Tight lines.

Most fun I ever had inshore fishing was wade fishing Cat Island out from Pass Christian.

Got on an incredible top water bite. Fishing was crap all day then had a 3 man limit in about an hour.

Red and white she dog.

On calm days, the h20 pistol minnow is tough to beat. Upgrade the hooks.

What in the hell was chasing mullet all over the water this morning? I'm not talking about small bait, it was 10" or so mullet (I assume) making 20-50 of them to go to the surface and jumping out of the water in an organized fashion. I at first thought dolphins but after this occurred many of times including directly under the light I was fishing on I never once saw a fin or hear a blow hole spout. Jack cravelle? Rat reds? I threw everything at them including jigs, DOA shrimp, light and medium diving crank baits, swim baits, various top water baits, Devils Horse (desperate at this time), gulp under a popping cork ect

No bite yet they caused chaos just outside the light in my casting distance as I walked away. After about an hour I said frick this shite and stormed home with my tail tucked between my legs. The chop was pretty heavy as opposed to the previous mornings. Mobile Bay for those wondering
