What did you want him to say in an public presser?
Yeah, he knew that the accuser had been arrested 3 times for DUI, and the cops have quit coming when she calls 911, because after showing cuts and red marks they found out the husband had been at practice during the supposed beating, and that she dropped the charges after her lawyer found out local PD were going to testify on her husbands behalf
. . . . . or should he have just said he wasn't aware of any beatings?

Well, he could have said he was aware and passed the information up the chain of command, like he now claims he did. Or he could have said he does not comment on personnel matters. Seems lying was the worst choice.
And, if all is as you say... why did Urban fire the guy, as soon as reporters found out about the domestic violence?
