Maybe, but this is a bad time to argue against that matchup getting the national coverage.
An argument for Astros vs.
Dodgers is just as strong. The 2 teams on last year's world series. Cuerently 1 is a division leader by 5 games and the other by 1 game. The Red Sox are 6.5 games ahead of the Yankees and the Yankees are in solid control so a wild card spot. The Astros-Dodgers game has much more meaning standings-wise

Except they're not the best two records in baseball and the biggest rivalry in the sport, bar none.
I get why you're frustrated as a fan, but come on, this is a decision any and every media company would make.

I don't watch any baseball game not involving the Astros.
And this right here is one of baseball biggest obstacles. Baseball is such a regional sport and many fans only watch their teams. Unlike with football and basketball, fans of those sports are more than likely going to watch games without any fan allegiances tied to them.
I get that. But the thing is, I used to be a fan who would watch ANY game that was on TV, no matter who was playing. Seeing the Yankees and Red Sox play so much made me grow weary of them, then eventually the rest of baseball. I'm probably in the minority, but I know I'm not alone.
I think the point that tipped the scales for good for me is the playoffs. The Yankees will ALWAYS get the prime time slot during the playoffs. I can't begin to count the number of Astros games in the playoffs that have started at noon or 1:00 on a weekday while the Yankees got to play at night. It's that favoritism that turns me off to the sport, besides the Astros.

As much as I agree with you, Slack is right. The simple fact is there are a lot more Boston and New York fans than there are Houston and LA fans, and all of them can't be at the game.
People will watch, Ray. Oh, people will watch.

It's more of an Astros thing. ESPN literally spent three days in LA for the Dodgers and cubs. ESPN and fox want to put the biggest fanbases on because that's the only way people will watch baseball. The astros, while being terrific, just aren't a national draw like the Yankees or Dodgers or red sox or cubs. When you get a game with any two of those four teams, they will always get the national tv games

I just wonder, though, if maybe the Astros could have a bigger fan base if they had them on TV more often?
This is where I think MLB fails itself. It has built up basically 4-5 teams because they get so much coverage and preferential treatment that the other teams are on a much lower level.

Not me. And I'm sure MLB and the networks give zero fricks.

Exactly, and maybe my wording wasn't perfect, but that's what I was getting at. You are more or less relying on the Dodger's fanbase to put up the numbers as opposed to having 2 major fanbases that span the country.
Most teams have regional fanbases. The Dodgers, BoSox, Cubbies, and Yanks are the exceptions.

quote:I doubt it. You said it yourself in your post. You only watch the Astros. Could more people in like north Dakota follow the Astros if they are on tv? Sure. But baseball by and large is a regional sport where people follow their team from where they grew up/live. It is what it is. They need to go full NBA and put the stars at the forefront to change this

That's fair but I don't think that issue is indigenous to the Yanks alone and has more to do with the New York market.
The Yanks, Giants, and Knicks are always getting the prime game slots. the Lakers and Knicks have been garbage for years, yet they get the lions share of the prime games including Christmas day.

It's really not that simple. I don't think putting the Astros on TV more often, now, in 2018, is going to change things. BOS and NYY are established fanbases because for decades they have been the biggest rivalry and had some of the best teams in baseball. Hell, I grew up a Yankees and Astros fan. Why? The Astros were the "local" team and the Yankees were best (and my dad was a big Don Mattingly fan).

I think they’re exceptions as a byproduct of always being on, and this goes back for generations. My FIL is a Yankees fan because that’s pretty much what he was exposed to as a kid. He’s in his seventies, btw.

You should watch more teams

Sure, but why were they on?

Only thing better would be Yankees vs Dodgers this weekend. Two teams with fans from coast to coast
Posted on 8/3/18 at 12:55 pm to LSUGrad9295
The Rangers just swept Houston. Nobody wants to watch that team.
