from a quality of football standpoint are we sure the fun belt is that much worse than the cusa?

At least the sun belt has a identity.

I think the top end of the Sun Belt every year could compete and be just fine in C-USA today.

C-USA especially before the AAC purge you had a lot more of the schools in larger cities than what is in the sun belt now. So bigger student bodies and bigger educational footprints where they would pull students from and recruit athletes from.

Today I dont think Troy and UAB are not that different athletically, with UAB getting back on its feet maybe even behind. Obviously LaTech and ULL are easily comps, and there are others. Really would be interesting to see if they could work out a playoff specifically between those two conferences like an FCS type deal, lot of natural rivalries and overlap in their geographic footprint.

It's not. I believe the CUSA TV deal tanked and the new Belt deal with ESPN is actually more valuable. CUSA kind of fell flat after the last round of expansion. I'm not sure that CUSA should any longer be the conference aspiration of the Cajuns to get out of the Belt

Thats a good question, and one that is discussed by us often.
I think that cusa has had a higher brand recognition than the sbc in the past, but that has pretty much gone away lately with the bad tv deal, etc. Not to mention that I don't know what it would cost for us to leave, and how much a decrease in tv rev would be.
But on the other hand, it would have far better interest in our world to play ltu, Rice, SMU, etc. instead of some of the SBC teams.
Honestly, we all desparaetly need a new and better conference, with lower travel costs and more intersting games.

There was talk a few years ago of combining the two conferences of creating a newer conference to compliment the geography of all of the schools. It didn’t really turn into anything, but it was definitely looked at as a possibility to take away the stranglehold of travel costs.

I, for one, think that the P5’s attempt to separate from the G5 will kill college football. It’s becoming apparent in college basketball with the way we are seeing the selection committee form the bracket in March. There’s no doubt that money talks, but fan interest will decrease.

This. I don't know what the exact financials are or what impact a somewhat watered down CUSA relative to the last round of expansion would have. Like I said, it's a less attractive option than a few years ago

But strictly from a conference mates standing, CUSA does still make more sense than the belt.

Tech
Rice
Southern Miss
Western Kentucky

These are all more interesting draws for our own attendance as well as for games our fans can travel too.

SMU is already in the AAC

and Rice will probably be the first call and immediately jump to the AAC fit culturally and longstanding rivalries with other current AAC members. If one of their member schools moves up to Power 5, probably UConn first, Rice would leave a an opening potentially for UL being a C-USA west member.

Rice has little to no interest in ever being good at football again. The AAC is already in bed a few miles east

App state is much better candidate for the AAC

Ehhhh, lol I dont think App State would be a good "fit", if it was strictly about football then absolutely would be a good choice IMO, but certain schools in the current AAC that all get a vote are taking Rice over App State no matter what. Cough cough Jewlane

Good lord.
Every school in the AAC would take Rice over App State or any sunbelt school, except maybe Ga State.
The first hurdle for conference membership is institutional fit. But Rice wouldn't be the first team in anyway.

Tulane doesn’t mind being in a confrance with UCF, houston, east Carolina, Memphis and so on. Why would they start caring about academics now? That would be retarded

in my opinion, the AAC should almost solely focus continuing to put a good football product. App state has a good home crowd and a good football team. If the AAC is to expand within their footprint, they are the logical choice.

Where’s that thread on La Tech BBB from a few years ago where their fans called our Athletic Performance Center a “prison?”
