I wondered if someone would ask this. You use an operator to call and have the receiver pay for the call. They have to agree then the call gets connected.

We used to do that as kids when the movie was over and it was time for our parents to pick us up.
A pay phone could dial the operator without putting money in it. You’d collect call your house. Parents would deny the charge, the operator would end the call and the parents would come pick you up.

That is probably one of the best commercials ever made.

Plenty of times.
Additionally the old man had a AT&T phone credit card.
It was twelve numbers long followed by a letter character.
Always “Z” for some reason, I’d say “Z as in Zulu” when reading it to the operator unless that person sounded African-American. In that case I’d say “Z as in Zeeebrah”.

Yeah, but I'm older than most on here and grew up in the days long before cellphones became the norm.
If at a pay phone, you either had enough change on hand to deposit in the coin slots to continue the call, or have the person called accept the charges for the call.

At least a couple of times to my parents while I was in college. Then they got an 800 number, then I bought a calling card so they could drop the 800 service.

A few weeks ago I was asking what happened to those 10-10 prefix collect call numbers.

I remember when my parents and parents of friends would from time to time say things along the lines of “y’all better not be making long distance calls”. You don’t hear that anymore.

Used to have to do it from jail. It sucks finding out when most of your peeps don't accept collect calls
