Every extra duty that I’ve paid for in construction, anywhere from $7-$12/hr is paid for the vehicle outside what is paid for the officer.

I've noticed the fire department is first on scene at many of the accidents in Houston. They block the road with their trucks. Fire department ambulances are usually first responders also.

Each time the vehicle is cut off, an officer has to turn off all that equipment or run the risk of draining the vehicle's battery power in minutes.

If they are upfitted correctly, all of the electronics should be on a timer that kills the power 30 minutes after the ignition is shut off. Anymore the amperage draw on modern electronics isn't that high.

As for leaving it running, a vehicle is inherently more likely to keep running than it is to restart.

Average MPG for a v8 cruiser is 12mpg, average MPG for a v8 cruiser that is never shut off is 6s and 7s.

It is just a racket.
I said for a long time that most fire depts are a waste of money. The high costs they require does not match the value they provide. But be careful calling out the sacred cow known as the fire dept. You will get bashed with the quickness. Most fire workforces could be reduced by at least 60%.

Our department was once called out to pull a horse from a sinkhole... three weeks later - same horse, same sinkhole.
I don't think a damned horse rescue justifies using hundreds of thousands of dollars in public assets.

There is no way you knew about that thing before you googled '70's laptop' 10 minutes ago.
I very much doubt that many agencies were using those things.
