I've lived off highland near I-10 before and depending on time of day could be 15-25, but its not a hike.

I live in that same area and an uber will cost $25 to get downtown. Nothing downtown is worth a $50 round trip.

Had a company function here about 3 months ago where we entertained customers. We packed the place and the night was a complete abortion. Damn near every customer we surveyed afterward said they would never go back if we booked that place again.

Damn after reading this thread I didn’t realize how bad downtown BR had gotten.

For awhile you had Roux, Lucy's, B&T, Happy's it seemed like you could walk to each. We did a Saturday night downtown about a month ago and it was bad, like really bad. Every bar was empty it felt.

Yep. And it was trending upwards for many years and now is merely a ghost town compared to what it once was.

I randomly went in there with another poster here like a year ago on a Saturday night. We were pretty much the only two people in there and they had some shitty DJ playing dubstep so loud you had to scream over it. It was super uncomfortable and the margaritas sucked. Glad it’s closing

I'll agree with you from a late night perspective, but for the most part, the restaurants and more low key spots seem to be doing fine, as long as they aren't fricking terrible like Lava Cantina

I agree that the nightlife downtown has been struggling mostly due to the ridiculous open container law now but I actually see more foot traffic now than in the past during the weekday and weekend during the day than I have in prior years

All downhill once they closed Punchers...even the Super Matherne's couldn't save the area.

City leadership and the business owners themselves really are killing any momentum downtown had going for it just a few years back.
Another new downtown twist I haven't seen mentioned: The S&P parking lots now are booting cars on weekend nights instead of issuing tickets (or just not caring like they used to at night). For nearly all of the resurgent period of downtown (2008-2016?) it was effectively free parking downtown and everyone new it. Can't blame S&P for wanting to make money, per se, but it means that businesses need to be $5-$10 better to justify people coming into the area to patronize them.
It's also not clear that street parking is free on nights and weekends, and they only advertise the free parking under I-110 which is absurd abd way too far to walk back to if you're leaving a downtown restaurant or bar.
New residences on Florida and the new Marriott may help some. The new Marriott only because once that gets lighting and the sidewalk back into order 3rd Street won't be split in half anymore. Right now 3rd and Florida is a funnel of darkness that routes you straight to the homeless people hanging out by the convenience store.
I'd also make an offer to Yellow Taxi to sponser to-go cups that people can use on 3rd street. If Yellow doesn't take it then Lyft or Uber (or all three - only thinking Yellow because they may have more motivation to get market share back from Uber). The to-go cups would then be advertisements to take another way home rather than attempting to drive drunk. This may be able to get by city counsel as a way to bring downtown back up and curb drunk driving at the same time.

I'll also add Lucy's shouldn't have closed. I think they panicked that they weren't printing money as a night club anymore when The Office/City Bar opened up but they were still always had a decent crowd and never really looked like they were losing money.

I'm pretty sure they had issues with hitting the food sales percentage required to still be considered a restaurant to can remain open on Sundays

Metered parking is free after 6 pm and on weekends. I think this is standard is most downtowns.
