This is a sequel to original, not the remake. I wonder if this will end up like Blomkamp's Aliens sequel.

EXCLUSIVE: MGM is developing a new installment of RoboCop and has set District 9 director Neill Blomkamp to helm the picture, which is titled RoboCop Returns. The studio hopes to revive a franchise that began with the Paul Verhoeven-directed satirical sci-fi action thriller that Orion released in 1987. Original writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner are producing and exec producing, respectively. Justin Rhodes, who co-wrote the Terminator film that Tim Miller is shooting, will rewrite the script that Neumeier and Miner wrote years ago as a planned sequel to Verhoeven’s hit, an installment that never happened. That duo is creatively involved in moving forward their creation for the first time since the original.

Robocop just seems like more of a time piece movie they should let die.

But there was a robocop 2. Are they ignoring that or is this a 3rd act

This is ignoring Robocop 2.

Why wasn’t this sequel story told years ago?
quote:
“Verhoeven felt at the time that making one would be de classe and he wasn’t interested in the politics of a sequel, “Neumeier told Deadline. “Then, the writers strike came along in 1988 and we were force majeured off the project. They brought in Frank Miller on a waiver. He wrote a draft and then another with Walon Green, and it got made by Irvin Kershner, who directed The Empire Strikes Back. I went off and did Startship Troopers with Paul.”

Huge Robocop fan and Robocop 2 is one of my favorite sequels ever. They should be ignoring Robocop 3 which is shite.
Also thanks to Halloween we have all these “ignore the sequel” trends starting.
Also that remake sucked just like the Total Recall remake

Blomkamp tried to do a sequel to Aliens that ignored Alien 3. He seems to be the driving force behind this trend.

Sequel to the new or old Robocop?
Posted on 7/11/18 at 8:56 pm to Brosef Stalin
How about they use the actual Frank Miller script instead of the Orion-overridden monstrosity that got filmed?

Everyone involved with Alien 3 wants to pretend it never happened.
Good luck getting David Fincher to ever discuss it.

Alien 3 should have been so much better. I still it gets too much hate.

Is this going to be the new trend? Sequels to film series that ignore all the previous other sequels? Does that mean at some point we’ll get movies like a Scream/I Know What You Did Last Summer crossover with Jamie Kennedy geting X-ed and an Austin Powers that pretends Elizabeth Hurley didn’t turn into a fembot?

Go on...

A large chunk of the problem came with setting a release date and then writing the picture.
The Fincher plans for it, probably best depicted in the Dark Horse comic adaptation, made about as good an attempt as possible of salvaging the mess.
The studio’s interference helped sink it.
