Spent 4 days about an hour south of Kansas City, out in the middle of nowhere really, for a camp with my kid. Driving around the little town I noticed more rebel flags flying in front of peoples dilapidated homes than I ever recall seeing. I honestly don't recall seeing the flag flying this proudly as a child in the 80's driving through Watson.

Just an observation I found strikingly odd. Especially considering how so many equate the flag with racism and the south. Missouri isn't considered the south by true southerners but was one of the 13 confederate states, however my knowledge of the history is that they didn't actually secede and contribute to the confederacy.

Place was pretty hillbilly though, fortunately we were isolated from the locals.

Missouri wants to be Southern so badly. They just aren't welcome.

I think missou had a confederate and union gov't during the war. That whole situation was an odd one though. Prior to missouri becoming a state there was a large debate over whether or not it should be admitted as a slavery state. They were admitted some time during the jacksonian period.

The missouri compromise was one of the driving forces of the civil war as a whole

You’re assuming that the current inhabitants in Missouri have a deep rooted family history there. Maybe they are fricking transplants idiot.

1820, Missouri Compromise. One of the main things that took America out of the Era of Good Feelings and into the period of sectionalism that resulted in the Civil War.

Probably similar to Missouri in that outside of the 2 major metro areas, it's nothing but whiskey tango meth country.

A few years back I was in N. PA for a few weeks outside Williamsport. I was floored by the amount of rebel flags on license plates and windows of trucks. Big country music scene there as well..... Waylon is big as is David Allen Coe and the outlaw country guys.

Of course.

Supporters say the confederate flag is about pride, not hate, but apparently vast majority of people with southern pride are poor people.
