trained to expect 20% for good service, because that’s a social norm.

Why’s that social norm? It’s because that’s what waiters would have you believe. Again, they can make $20-30/hr on 15-18% so frick em if they think deserve 20%.

If you were paying cash it was $2/per essentially cause those 2 qtrs were going in the tip jar. If they didnt....good luck getting your next round...

extra $1-$6 dollars to you.

A. That’s not the point.

B. Why stop at an extra $1-6, what another $1-6 on top of that? It’s gotta stop somewhere.

Using my example of a 15 buck per person ticket, that coincides with you working at applebees. What did you take home on an average weeknight? Weekend night?

At Applebee’s, circa 2006ish, weeknights would be roughly $50-60 per night. Fridays and Saturdays could usually pull around $100, but had to be closing to do it.

Don’t worry about “busting my chops.” The numbers you posted weren’t close. Even as a trainer for the fine dining restaurant, with steaks and sides being served a la carte, I can count on 2 hands how many times I walked with $270+ after a single shift. You think that’s a “normal” number for the average restaurant server?

I entered the order to the kitchen?

I picked it up?

$0 tip.... similar level of service as fast food

Emily Post says standard is 15-20%.

Maybe the admin can sticky the link to her website and put an end to the weekly tipping debates.

This thread proves that a majority of the OT bros are cheap AF in real life.

You must have been doing it wrong bro.

Two couples. Two drinks apiece, some hors d ouevres and salads or small plates, four main dishes, four or more sides, a couple desserts, and coffee. That's a $400 ticket, and I'm being generous. Fifteen percent is 60 dollars. Give up your 5 percent tipout, that's 40 for the table take home. You said you'd have a 4 table section, and you mean to tell me you couldn't serve 6 four tops (and some deuces) between 5 and 10 and take home 250 or more? C'mon dude.

Outback in West Funroe, circa 1998ish, most customers we're regulars and we'd get 20% pretty regularly. Week nights was $100-125ish, and weekend you sucked if you couldn't pull $200-225 a night. Valentines night I pulled nearly $500.

The whore at Las Palmas gets less than that.

I tip 20% if food is good and service. If mediocre, 15%. Today I tipped a dollar and left a note. Mexican restaurant for lunch. Not my regular but gave it a try. Sat at bar ordered a bloody mary. The waitress had to ask another server to make it. It was crap. Ordered lunch, and just pushed the 3/4 filled glass of BM to the edge of the bar. Runner brings food, and leaves without asking if I needed anything. Finally flag down the server who made the drink, and asked for a margarita. Got the margarita and still no signs of the original server. Finally she comes by and asks if I'm ready for the my ticket which I say yes. Leave her a dollar for a 18.00 dollar check, and yes she charged me for the BMary.. I leave and write on the credit card receipt and say Bloody Mary was terrible as was the service. And I used to be in the restaurant business.

What about hair dressers? I get the MVP at Sports Clips and that’s $30. Is 20% justifiable?

I always tip 20% and if the service sucks then most likely means the food sucks and they will not have me as a repeat customer.

Yes, inflation.

Except the use of a percentage means no need to change it due to inflation. Meal that used to cost $50 netted a $10 tip at 20%. Meal now cost $60 nets a $12 tip at 20%. Inflation accounted for.

And to answer the OP that has been creeping up for a quile. I swear I recall it being 10% decades ago, but I was poor and rarely had the opportunity to eat at a place where I left a tip soI am uncertain if that is a faulty memory or not.

Well our weekly tipping thread. One of the OT’s top 5 obsessions.
Most places I have either lived or worked 18%- 20% has been average amongst most people. Outside of a few places, most people consider that the norm.
I live in a tourist town, so we have many career service industry workers. The dynamic here is completely different than that most people posting on here have experienced.
