Thinking about taking a trip out to this area, anyone have any experience or suggestions for this area?

I spent a few days in Albuquerque and hated it. Just wasn't for me.

My wife has been wanting to do this since we have southwest companion pass and it’s a quick flight from Los Angeles.

I’m curious as to the responses, because my initial reaction to her was hell no, it doesn’t seem very interesting.

Santa Fe is nice. Lots of art galleries and good food. Day trip to Taos by taking the high road through mountain villages that have native american artisan galleries scattered about. The Low road is scenic too as it goes along the rio grande valley. Albuquerque I have never been to as most people say its not worth the time.

I am a pretty big waterfowl photographer. There is a national wildlife refuge about 1 hour South of Albuquerque in Sorocco that is an amazing place to watch ducks and geese. It's called Bosque Del Apachie NWR. It's a mecca for people like me but probably boring as frick to anybody else. My family and I usually fly out there, rent a car, and go ski at Angel Fire. I then get a hall pass for a few days to stay after we are done skiing. Otherwise, Albuquerque is a dud.

Go to the Hot Air Balloon Fest in October for a day LINK
Then spend a couple of days in Santa Fe. Cool town. Go up to the ski resort and take the lift up to the top and hike down. The Aspens will be in Fall colors.

Then hit up Taos and don't forget to check out the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. There's a little brewery just east of the bridge that is pretty good.

skip Albuquerque and go straight to Santa Fe. It's a unique town and it's surrounded by some scenic terrain if you enjoy hiking, fly fishing, and other outdoor activities. Lots of art galleries, shops and restaurants in town.

Avoid Albuquerque and spend more time in Santa Fe and Taos. If you like art Canyon Rd. in Santa Fe is one of the most iconic streets in the US, you can spend a day browsing around galleries. Meow Wolf, is a trippy interactive gallery to visit as well. Taos I about an hour in a half north of Santa Fe, drive up the mountain and grab a giant beer and schnitzl dish at the Bavarian, you can drive up to the restaurant or take a ski lift.

I second this, it's a beautiful place. The whole area is. I've visited the area several times, I love the Socorro area, usually stay in San Antonio, a small village just below Socorro (actually between Bosque del Apache and Socorro). If you go back east from this are (can't remember the hwy number offhand), it goes through some beautiful areas. I hope to move out that way sometime!

Wife and I did Route 66 from Amarillo to Flagstaff. Did Diners, Drive Inns and Dives the whole way. Good stops in Albq. We are fans of Breaking Bad so we went by all of the houses and stuff. Go to Madrid where the Wild Hogs movie was filmed. SantaFe is great. Try not to be in a hurry. Places like SantaFe and Sedona are better when you are not rushed.

Meow Wolf in Santa Fe is cool as shite, was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. They are music shows there occasionally. Lots of good green chile centric food to be had, I think our favorite place was La Choza.

If you head up to Taos, Rio Grande del Norte National Monument is incredible.

If you’re serious about Santa Fe, I’ve made quite a few posts on it. I’m headed to Crested Butte in morning for 3 days then go Santa Fe for 5 days. I’m more than happy to answer specific questions and make suggestions. As someone else said: one of the coolest, unique cultures in the country. Sadly, the LA glitterati have decided the back to earth diaspora of this decade will center on Santa Fe, so I figure it will be ruined and ridiculously overpriced (to visit, already pricey to live) soon.

Both are really awesome.

In ABQ: Hot airballon fest is so fun, Sandia Mtns are really nice. Loved Old Town.

Santa Fe has some great areas to walk downtown.

Santa Fe National Forest is reopening on Monday 7/9 which is good news if you wanted to do any hiking in the Pecos Wilderness portion that falls within that forest. Santa Fe Baldy/Lake Katherine, Pecos Baldy, and the Truchas Peaks are all back on the table.

Carson NF is still closed and there is a fire burning southeast of Taos so the Wheeler Peak Wilderness up at Taos Ski Valley is off limits.
