Is your camp in a no wake zone?

Well take 2 hours or go another way. If you hit something hauling arse next to their boat you might end up in their boat with them. It's dangerous and stupid.

Yes, which leads to the obvious conclusion: stay on plane!

You've never hit anything with a boat? Ever? No logs or stumps? Powpow hit a log right under the water that knocked his engine off the transom. Anything can happen.

Passing close to somebody going fast is exponentially more dangerous than passing close to somebody going slow. It is dangerous and stupid to pass close to somebody wide open.

Probably so. I dont have a hard number but 40 is roughly what I go by. If I'm passing close I do it at idle and if I can swing wide I stay on plane.

Agree. 30+ yards and I stay on top.

If we are close enough that we can talk, I slow down to idle.

How do you define close? I agree if you mean 5'. Otherwise you're just being incredibly alarmist and ignorant.

Many times slowing down only increases wake size.

Depends on boat that is on plane. If it's a ski boat/center console type it's going to throw much bigger wake slowing down to anything about idle. Bass boat throws virtually little to no wake when running flat out (on pad). Slows down for boat and arse end plows down throwing a big wake right towards boat sitting unless done far enough away.

Moral to the story, know your boat and what it does (wake-wise ) at different speeds so you can act accordingly when going by others.

Of course the width/depth of water at that location as well as geography comes into play here as well.

This always stirs a debate with me and some friends. I slow down for everyone within about 50yds. The way I look at it, I’m not fishing tournaments or trying to go 100mph everywhere, I’m out there to be on the water, which is my paradise, relaxing with friends and family, and catching a few fish. So, if I have to slow down it’s no big deal to me. A few friends however, never slow down for anyone.

If I could make a law on it it'd be 40 yards

Good thing you don’t then. I’d rather not everyone set down then holeshot again, trashing the bank I’m fishing even worse

What about people who put up homemade no wake zone signs by their camps? How do y'all feel about them?

My camp is on a canal that's 35-40 yards wide, it's one of two camps on the canal. It takes 1 minute to slow down. Agree to disagree.

Depends on the distance. In close quarters (small canal/bayou) I slow down and idle. If I can keep about 30+ yards of distance I stay on step. I won’t throw a big wake on step.
