More specific HVAC question. Situation is changing. Lol

This morning the AC would not shut off. Despite turning the thermostat up or switching it to off. The attic blower is still going. We had to shut this off at the breaker.
Now. Question. What does this sound like and how much?
And, can I turn the unit back on when I get home and get as much cooling as I can while I can? Or is this in some way hazardous? If the outside fan isn't not running I understand that I am wasting my time and $$$. But if it's runs?

Maybe a contactor pitted together?

Does that equal an inferno in my attic?

Techs were here last night. Would they leave a switch on? And jacking with anything electrical beyond a breaker panel exceeds my comfort level. Me sweating in a 130 degree attic that is cramped by design and cursing is a no-go.
A man has to know his limitations.

1) is it just the fan running or is it the compressor as well (likely just fan)
2) is the switch on the thermostat for fan set to "on" or "auto"
i had same issue a few years back. the control board went bad, replaced for a few hundred dollars

is the unit on a split by any chance?

This is the problem. If it is “hundreds” then we will have spent about a grand over the past year. On an old unit. I feel I’m gonna do this and the coils are already leaking and the compressor will go.

Could just be bad Capacitor

Could be a bad thermostat

Could be the contactor has welded together?
Normally pretty cheap part to fix yourself.
The low voltage from the thermostat tells it to open or close but sometimes when they close they over-heat and stay closed causing the unit to not shut off.
I know the outside unit has a contactor but I cant remember if the inside unit does as well.

If I were a betting man, I would be all in.

I had on an older unit (15 years old at the time) a relay continued to get stuck, keeping the fan running all the time. Otherwise, the unit ran normally. I could "reset" the relay by pulling the disconnect out, but that was annoying to do. I ultimately replaced the relay

Bad thermostat or bad relay.

Control panel (the thing that tells all the components when to go on and off) is fried. A few hundred IMO.

I would check the stat first.
If it's not the stat then probably a relay, contactor, or control board.
none of which are horribly expensive and could possibly be done by you if you are mechanocally inclined enough.
Don't think it is capacitor.
