This thread could now all be a moot point.

Shin Soo Choo would have had to serve had he not won the Asian games back in 2010.

The reason for this is because he has finished his middle school, but has not graduated high school. He spent a few months in a Korean high school(Dongbuk high school) before going to Hamburg. If he didn't graduate middle school, like Chungyong Lee of Crystal Palace(who's exempt from military duty), Son would've been free from all of this in the first place, but how unfortunate is he.

First, I now think Son might not be very smart.
Second, how is not finishing middle school disqualify you for military service?
Third, could he just renounce citizenship?

That team should get a reprieve for beating Germany 2-0

So just to update, this tournament is basically Son’s last chance to be exempt from military service.

If you haven’t been keeping up with it, South Korea have not looked good at all.

In the group stage they finished with two wins and a loss. The wins coming against Bahrain (6-0) and Kyrgyzstan (1-0). They lost to Malaysia, 2-1.

Below is the knockout bracket

From everything i’ve read, Uzbekistan is the favorite. They won the U-23 Asian championship a few months back, including a 4-0 win over South Korea in the semis.

This tournament is also U-23 with three unrestricted players allowed.

Spurs conspiracy theory out there is that he has German citizenship from his time at Leverkusen.

(It goes into greater, more plausible details in the article I read)

Could you link it if possible? What does the German citizenship have to really do with the situation? Just the fact that he wouldn’t be a man without a country?

For whatever reason, this saga is fascinating to me lol.

Wasn't an article, but this post is the main idea.
Still, it's not much to go on.

"Although- according to some korean press, even if Son does not win the U23 Asian Cup in August, he will still be able to play.

The reason is that he might have received permanent residency at Germany during his time there (which was a long time). Receiving permanent residency will not allow him to not serve at all, but it does allow him to delay the service. However, this will draw criticism, especially since he will be playing for the korean national team.

Realistically, the best method will be for Son to indeed win the U23 Asian cup this year and be forgone of the service requirement."

What a crazy story. Kinda puts our athletes contract disputes/hold outs/etc in a new perspective. Right in his prime too.

IMO, if the Uzbeks are the best team in your continent, a continent of at least 2 billion people, somebody somewhere probably deserves to be fired.

It’s U-23 and three wildcards. Japan has like a C team there as well.

AFC is extremely weak as is.

Nice!

Uzbekistan were the favorites so that is a huge win for South Korea.

They’ll face either Syria or Vietnam in the next round.

Japan is through to the semis on the other side as well.
