I have become curious about the Jeep Wrangler...a friend just got one.

Not sure if I would ever get one but I just tried to build one online for fun...my questions are these:
- my friend, Bob (not his real name), didn't need the off-roading capabilities of a Rubicon, so he went with the Sahara...but let's say down the road, he wants to take this thing to do some serious off-roading...it is my understanding that any Sport or Sahara could be given some modifications to give it Rubicon rock-climbing capabilities...is this true?
- is it true that the Sahara holds it value better than the Sport?
- What are the most common modifications that you would recommend to a new Wrangler owner? I have told Bob to get 35" tires with black wheels (with 2.5" lift) and maybe get steel bumpers. What else?
- Are Jeep Wrangler interiors really water proof? Bob got leather seats.
Bob is using this for his daily commute...he told me the Rubicon is heavier than other models, gets worse gas mileage and is much more expensive...that is why he got the Sahara.
I would be curious to hear others' thought-process when buying their Wrangler.

Hope “bob” has a second car for when the Wrangler is in the shop

Congrats on buying a different piece of crap.

list from best to worst
Rubicon Hardrock
Rubicon
Sahara
Sport
Base
from my understanding, the rubi's have the electronic sway bar disconnect and diff lockers. the sahara is basically a "luxury"/interior package. the sport/base might as well be the same vehicle.
i'm also in the JK market, and have been told to look at the 2012s or newer. the '07-'11 have the crappy motors and axles. the motors need new gaskets fairly early and the gears in the axle don't make up for the extra weight/larger tires after modding.

You are over-thinking this.
Just slap a Dave Matthews Band sticker on the back and you're good to go.

The Rubicon is the worst riding vehicle I've ever driven. It's a bumpy rattle-trap. Just my own experience.

Rubicon owners look down on all other Jeep owners.
Sorry Bob is not an OT baller.

If you like repairs, then it's the car for you!

If it's a 4dr automatic I hope your friend is a soccer mom.

J - Just
E - Empty
E - Every
P - Pocket
There is a reason that acronym sticks. Fundamentally there isn't a difference between the Sahara and Rubis - the frame, motor, etc can all be the same.
People who buy a rubi and then put new wheels and tires on it waste a fair amount of the cost of the rubi. If I were to get a Jeep I would wait and get one in 2019 with the ecodiesel in it.
With the higher torque it should be a great rock climber.

The only thing you would need in addition is lockers, but you will probably never off road at that level

They all pretty much hold the same value, some options are more sought after from the soccer mom crowd

nothing you will use off road so what cosmetic features are you interested in?

But yes, you dont need a rubicon like the 95% of people who buy them.

Sahara owner here, great purchase. Has never been in the shop(had it almost 2 years now). I recommend it.

Mine just hit $120K miles and has starting falling apart. I have something new on a weekly basis.

Better get a winch for when you get drunk and a little cocky

Never cheap out and not get the Rubicon. Ever.
Also, I have the least year of the 4.0 in a Rubicon. 189000 miles. Bought it from an old man at 180k all stock.
Other than a rear bearing and seal, a set of plug wires and plugs, and brakes, it is surprisingly reliable. Have a 3.5 inch lift, armor, flat fenders, tire carrier, winch, and wide 33s.
I try not to ever drive it because jeeps are gay.
Buy a used xterra offroad non pro4x instead.
