HBO has just given a pilot order to Jane Goldman’s Game of Thrones spinoff, one of five potential follow up shows to the acclaimed series currently in the works—and with it, we have the first story details, revealing a show set well before the Westeros we’re familiar with.
HBO officially revealed today that Goldman’s series will be set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, in a period where Westeros transitions from an era of fantastical prosperity known as the “Age of Heroes” into something more akin to the world we know of in the show—heralded by the the arrival of the horrifying White Walkers, and the Long Night they cast over the land.
Here’s the brief plot description, courtesy of Variety: And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend–it’s not the story we think we know.
The story we think we know has already been told by Martin in the pages of his fascinating lore book, The World of Ice and Fire, which chronicled how Westeros used to be a land where Men cohabited with mystical creatures, like giants and the magical children of the forest, before the arrival of the White Walkers nearly drove the inhabitants of Westeros to extinction.

Difficult to get excited about this until GRRM finishes ASOIAF.

I don't know what to think about this. I'd kind of like for the Heroes to not be fully elaborated on and be more myths.... but I still am interested in this period. I'm guessing we'll see The Long Night.

Going to be hard to gain an audience with such a similar plot line to the original series (seeing as most of the main core of the show revolves around the same villain and issues etc etc)
Seems very Walking dead/ Fear of the walking dead ish

Zero interest.
I stopped reading after Feast for Crows with no intention of continuing until it's completed (by Brandon Sanderson).
My wife digs the show, so I don't mind finishing it but I hate every creative direction they've gone in since they passed the books. They are arse writers.

I’m not fully erect at this news, but I will most certainly watch the shite out of this show.
Unless it just sucks balls.

I think GOT is the greatest show ever, but I want a little break after it’s over. Unfortunately, HBO is going to try to keep the subscribers.

I'd have bet money that the first spinoff would be Dunk and Egg, but this is actually more interesting per se because we don't clearly know what happens in a lot of the stories.
We know what's going to happen at the end of Dunk and Egg's adventures.

Member when Battle Star Galactica was going to take us back to when the robots were created. Yeah that series really held up well.
Maybe they could name this Game of Thrones: A Solo Story.

The more I think about it, the less I like the idea. I’m afraid they’re going to clump a bunch of potentially mythical characters into a very small, unrealistic time frame (considering the supposed age should last over many years). It will be silly if we see Lann the Clever, Bran the Builder, etc. all just chilling at the same time.

I’m surprised at all the negativity in this thread. If you’re a fan of this grrm universe, I don’t see how you can NOT be excited about this.
It won’t need your help on the ratings, it will be stupidly successful

No Robert's Rebellion? Meh.

Would it have killed them to do Dunk And Egg instead? Or is that one of the other 4 pilots?
I ask because going back to the dung ages before the Andals ever crossed over to Westeros seems a bit too divorced from the setting.
We going to get snarks and grumkins in this one?
