You hate California because you’re jealous you don’t make 3 digits? Sad!

For one, working at Facebook or google isn’t an 8 to 5 job. They make those campuses awesome so you’ll spend a lot of time there. Factor in a commute and you are spending a shite ton of time there.
Secondly, you may laugh at the guy out of college, but if other companies are paying new hires more, then that’s what his current earning potential is. It makes sense to optimize your salary rather than say “I get paid enough already”.

I'm just surprised companies are willing to pay so much for labor costs, just to be located in the Bay area.

You should check out there cost of living if you want to know their true standard of living. Many of us here are living better than they they are with a lot less income.

Cut those salaries in half and take benefits away and replace tech job titles with "plant operator" and you have the typical posts on here you see about once a week

You have to realize that these engineers are not the run of the mill plant/pipeline mechanical engineer from Louisiana or Texas. These are software engineers or other types of engineers who know programming. The best of the best.
If I were single, I would do it in a heartbeat, mainly for the bonus/stock options.
