If there is one thing Louisiana does do right, it's requiring motorcycle riders to wear helmets. It blows my mind that currently only 19 states require you to wear helmet on a motorcycle. Why in the hell would a state make legislation about seat belts but not motorcycle helmets? What's your take?

Maybe they are hoping for less bikers on the road. A net positive imo.

It blows my mind people think the govt should be able to make laws regarding ones own personal safety that has no outcome on anyone else

Straight up insurance lobby. You are less likely to need long term care in a car accident while wearing a seatbelt.

It is cheaper for them in a motorcycle wreck to pay the death benefit than to pay for long term care.

As a rider - frick all of you that wish for motorcyclists to be dead while texting, yelling at your kids and balancing a 60oz drink and double cheeseburger in your lap while you drive.

I do agree, so I should clarify. It blows my mind that they are willing to legislate seatbelts, but not helmets. Like if you will do one, why not the other? Obviously the seat belt thing has just turned into another way for the state/municipalities to make money off of tickets. Why not do the same with helmets, all while making the people safer at the same time.

I think it’s dumb to ride without a helmet or seatbelt. I also think it’s dumb for the state to compel me to do either.

Also first responders, ER care and the like. If you're wearing a seat belt it's likely to be less of a hit on the city in a situation where you have a crash

Then you should be denied insurance when you're ejected face first into a tree.

Deal?

Well then, since we're generalizing: as a driver, frick you lane splitting, engine revving, SOA wannabe douchebags who swerve in and out of lanes at 120 mph, 8 inches in front of my bumper which causes an extremely unsafe situation for me and every other driver on the road.

Yup, once you make insurance mandatory, they are going to control aspects that make it affordable.

They can't because a judge is unable to disclose to a jury if the accident victim was wearing a seat belt. See Seat Belt Gag Order.

Pretty sure the insurance company doesn't really care about you after you die.

Don't make stupid laws just to make money off somethign as stupid as making an adult wear a seatbelt.
Also, don't be stupid and not wear a seatbelt.

It absolutely affects other people if you aren't wearing a seatbelt.

1. If you are wearing a seatbelt it is far easier to maintain control of your vehicle during sudden maneuvering. You can't steer well if you're flying across the cabin or flying through a windshield.

2. A seatbelt lowers the cost to the city of responding to the accident. Sending an ambulance costs more than you think.

3. Suppose you are hospitalized but don't have enough insurance. You will still receive care, but someone has to pay for it. But if you'd been belted in the cost will be lower if anything.

What if you're lucky enough to survive and eating through a tube for the rest of your life? Who's paying for that?

Ehhh Donorcycle riders die every week round here with a helmet on. All you do is preserve your face and snap your neck.

While you can still die with a seat belt on it's much less likely than if you don't buckle up...
