LSU had five players make the four deep preseason All-SEC team, tied for second to last with Auburn, only one more that Vanderbilt's four. Georgia led the way with 13 players, while Bama was tied with Missouri at 11. I know it's meaningless preseason accolades, but I don't feel great about being more than doubled by Missouri, and only having one more than Vandy.

The fact that Missouri has 11 players on it should tell you something about the validity.

Not that surprising given the amount of unknowns we have. Let’s see where we stand after the season.

We have a bunch of unproven commodities, talented, but unproven.

Athlon is a print version of Rivals. It's all designed to sell magazines.

And Rant posters actually believe we're going to beat Georgia this coming season?

This is from Dandy's yesterday.

quote:

Turning to football, Athlon Sports has released its SEC Football 2018 All-Conference Team and five Tigers made the cut. Linebacker Devin White and cornerback Greedy Williams were named to the first team and were the Tigers’ only selections on the first or second teams.

Offensive lineman Garrett Brumfield and defensive lineman Rashard Lawrence made the third team, while wide receiver Jonathan Giles was a fourth team selection. Personally, I think they’re sleeping big-time on Rashard Lawrence.

That's impossible, The Rant was just bragging last week that they always scoop (cut and paste from other sources) Dandy.

We played a ton of freshmen last year & have a few more transfers that will suit up, and these guys hardly get offseason pub because they've merely flashed and havent put it all together. We are littered with SOPH on our 2 deep especially on defense.

Thad Moss, Feheko, Travez Moore, Lewis, Tratore

2nd year players

Chaisson/Anthony/Thornton
Delpit
Vincent
Monroe
the OL trio
the GA LB duo
Kirklin
Justin Jefferson

will all play a TON. The future impact is immeasurable by the media at this point.

Yeah, I remember them accusing Dandy's of getting all of their information from the Rant.

How the hell did Dandy get that information a day before it was posted here?

Heading into the 2011 season, Athlon had the following for their preseason All-SEC team:

(1st/2nd/3rd = points)

Arkansas (4/6/2 = 26)
Alabama (7/2/1 = 26)
Georgia (5/3/3 = 24)
So Caro (4/2/2 = 18)
Florida (1/3/2 = 11
Ole Miss (2/2/1 = 11)
Vandy (0/3/3 = 9)
LSU (0/2/5 = 9)

In fact, I think one of those preseason LSU picks was Dworaczyk - who didn't play all year. Which means we actually fell below Vandy in those rankings above. Also note they didn't have Claiborne as a pre-season 1st or 2nd Team All-SEC. I also recall Athlon's mid-season all conference teams. While Claiborne was well on his way to multiple post-season awards (and 1st Team All-American status), Athlon again did not see fit to have him on the All-SEC 1st team (again, at the midway point of 2011).

So while this isn't "proof" that Athlon is lacking credibility and/or might routinely under-values LSU, there is enough information (in these numbers and other seasons as well) to not get caught up in their rankings.

This is a slap in the face. Lawrence was dominant when he was on the field.
