I am having a discussion with some co workers that believe every apsect of professional sports is rigged to the point that the league knows who is going to win championships before the season starts.

“Peyton Manning was retiring so they let him win a Super Bowl same as Ray Lewis. How did Cleveland come back 3-1 against a 73-9 GS team.”

I’m not saying sports aren’t fixed sometimes, but these guys are extreme in my opinion.

If you believe pro sports aren’t rigged, especially the nba, after the Tim Donaghy fiasco then you’re just naive

The leagues definitely try to tilt the outcome. Look at all the bad REPLAY calls that went New England's way last year.

But they still didn't get their preferred outcome.

The NBA is so rigged they let all of the semi finals finish in 5 or fewer games. They hate money that much.

i dont think the nfl or nba are rigged. Too many would have to be involved, and thats risking too much to lose all their viewers if it were found out. But i do 1000000% believe refs have too much influence on games. They have their favorite teams/players and reguardless of what they say, they will make biased calls...they are human.

When people bitch about games being rigged, they're usually implying the league is intervening to make sure a particular player or team advances. I think that's complete BS. I'm sure the league has a preferred outcome, but I don't believe they actively ensure it or the Orlando Magic would have lost to Cleveland in 2009.

I do believe it's very easy for a referee to impact a game, particularly for betting purposes, but I don't think it's some conspiracy from the league.

There are subtle ways they can give an advantage to certain teams.

If you're the SEC office and you want to favor Bama, you send the crew that calls the fewest holding penalties. If you're MLB in September and you want to tilt a pennant race, you assign a crew that calls the strike zone a certain way. Goofdell's disciplinary standards make no sense at all unless you assume he's trying to help some teams and hurt others.

The league had an agenda when they called Durant’s push a technical foul but then ruled that Draymond’s was just a common foul when it was just as excessive if not more. Not sure what the agenda is but it’s there.

The NBA is very hesitant to toss a guy early in a game. We saw that with Draymond in Game 1.

I see the inconsistencies, but like you said, the agenda isn't clear. If that's the case, does it really exist?

Except you had an NBA Ref admit to fixing games and people still watch.

No you had an NBA ref who was busted by the FBI admit he bet on games he officiated and claims he made calls that affected the outcome. The part most tin foil hat people like you and the OPs coworker miss is the FBI was involved, ie it’s illegal.

Now have the over time been other Donaghy’s? Probably there have been a handful of player involved scandals (also note all were caught and punished). But the idea that the league is fixed from top to bottom down to they predetermine what team will win the championships is just delusional

It’s not clear, but something is there. Enlightening, I know. The inconsistencies in calling the games do nothing but fuel the skepticism. Especially when most of the time it involves the stars. Draymond clearly pushed the player just as hard and right after Durant did and he deserved the same punishment. The NBA shouldn’t be giving special treatment to him just to make sure he doesn’t get tossed or gets another T. I’m not sure how many Ts Draymond needs before he’s suspended a game, but I’m guessing the number is pretty small.

Not what I was arguing. I was saying viewership didn't go down despite the scandal of a ref admitting to fixing games. As someone else said, too many people would have to be involved for a league wide set up. In this day and age, it would be reported on Twitter before it even happened.

Inconsistencies in officiating certainly don’t help the optics. Plus the fact that coaches and players aren’t allowed to even criticize terrible referees without fines is horse shite.

It’s not just that they’d lose viewers, what’s being alleged is ILLEGAL. It would make no sense to risk that. All it would take is 1 ambitious DA or state AG or politician to bring a case and that would cost billions and someone jail time. Or they could just play the games and make billions straight up.
