here's the scenario:
My SIL (son in law) sold his old Jeep Wrangler for 6 grand. Dude gave him a check, SIL kept title and took pic of dudes driver license. He is young, he should have known better. Check is no good. What should he do next?

The sheriffs office says its a civil matter because it was a broken contract. I don't know if I believe that

Call 444-4444

Really though you won't get a real response on here.

Go with the sheriff and get that truck back. He doesn't own it because he bounced the check

Call local DA’s office. Had to do this before at an old job. DA’s office sent the person certified mail giving them a deadline to make the check right (including NSF fees our bank charged us) or they’ll have a warrant issued for their arrest.

Did he call the guy? Is the check “no good” as in NSF or is it written on a closed account?

I might call the guy before I start hassling the sheriff.

He should have at least called the bank to verify funds before handing over the keys.

Time to get the Sheriff involved.

Well that’s fricked up, considering the DA has a worthless checks division.

bull shite. Writing bad checks is a crime. Theft by deception comes to mind. Call the AG's office for advice.

Last time I went to court for a traffic ticket the girl before me on the docket was in jail for writing bad checks and she wrote a lot less than $6000 worth. She said she had been in jail for over two years. Judge would not let her out until she made good on the checks - she said she did not have any money because she was in jail and Judge said tuff shite and then he sent her back to jail. True story in Baker City Court.

File a criminal complaint AND a civil petition seeking dissolution of the contract with damages and attorney’s fees.

Writing bad checks and/or fraud is not criminal?
