We were there almost at the same time, I seem to remember being there maybe a week or so before you.

Yes it is crowded but for me it didn't matter too much. It was lovely and a cool experience.

Our favorite restaurant was Miky Cantina in Monterosso.

White wine, anchovies, and pesto are all a must. If you don't have all three you are really doing yourself a disservice.

And make friends with the owners of El Pirata and have one of their cannolis.

My intention isn't to shite all over your experience or anyone else's, for that matter. Anything I'm stating about CT is from my own personal opinion and experiences. I'm really glad y'all enjoyed yourselves - I do remember that you were going right around the same time as us now that you mention it.

I mean, how can a place like this be bad? We were there in July and it wasn't packed. The orange building at the top right, you see an umbrella, that was a small restaurant. Holy shite it was good. I had a simple salmon panini and it was out of this world. Now sitting there over looking the Med Sea didn't hurt.

Cinque Terre remains one of my absolute favorite places on earth. We were there in July of 2017, but I researched ahead of time to be there when no cruise ships were in port nearby to avoid the crazy crowds of day trippers. We arrived by train and had no problems doing so. Easy. We stayed three nights in Riomaggiore in an apartment from vrbo (just to the left of the ‘red house’) and it was a dream. I highly recommend hiring Pall from trekguyd.com if you want to hike because he took us off of the heavily touristed trails and the views were incredible. He’s an American who’s been living there for a couple of decades now. A++ experience. We were a family of five with three kids (youngest was 6 then).
Last summer we were in Italy and hiked the Path of the Gods in Amalfi and I preferred the hike in Cinque Terre (and the Cinque Terre area in general vs. Amalfi coast). Perhaps not particularly relevant, but we’ve also done Puglia on the Adriatic coast and stayed in Polignano a Mare and that is highly recommended, as well, though harder to access via public transportation (my preference) than Cinque Terre.

Very touristy by day. almost dead at night. Stay in the central town and hike to other towns or take the train during the day.

Yes to Puglia. I’ll be there in October?

I think you will enjoy it! We stayed a few days in Matera (also highly recommended) and then took the local train over to Bari and then on to Polignano. From there, we did a day trip over to Alberobello and some nearby hill towns with an absolutely NOT recommended guide. But, other than that dude, we really enjoyed our time here. Verrrry laid back part of the country. I loved being with my family and all of the locals on the main piazza, having a long dinner, watching the kids try out their Italian on the local kids and the local kids trying out their English with mine. The kids and my husband also loved jumping off of the cliffs in Polignano and the food in Puglia was The. Best. we’ve had in Italy. Every meal was amazing. It was a great place to end our trip because it is so laid back, it’s like a vacation from your vacation. I loved it. If I had it to do over again, the only thing I’d change is I’d rent a car for the day trip to Alberobello instead of hiring the private guide to take us. Enjoy!

Stayed 3 nights there I believe... in monterosso, it’s the one that has sandy beach and most restaurants/night life. Hiked everyday to different towns, would swim and cliff jump in different areas. Take train back. Ate mussels and drank wine for every meal. Can’t wait to go back
