The point of the problem is that 316 is 3 hundred, 1 tens, and 6 ones, but Jack left off a tens and was 10 off.
It's trying to teach a concept that in many Asian languages is represented in their number naming system but is overly confusing and pointless in English.
For example, sixteen in English is actually ten six in Chinese and Japanese, so it literally means 1 ten and 6.

It's kind of like trying to switch to the metric system. It doesn't matter what's "better". The transition is going to be painful because suddenly parents can't help kids with their homework and the teachers don't know it as well either. A noble attempt to replace math by memorization with an understanding of what numbers are and mean...but it's a bridge too far.

Say what you will. I am no supporter of common core. But it is a fact that the standard method we learned as kids is basically just memorization of basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division tables) and then memorizing steps to apply those memorized figures. We don't learn the meaning of what we are doing until calculus 2...which the vast majority of the population never studies.
I understand the thought process behind looking for improvement but it won't work here.

My kids go to a Blue Ribbon private school. They brought common core in a few years ago. Less than a month into the school year they trashed all of the common core text books and went back to method that got them to Blue Ribbon status.

You didn't make a comment. Childish "FIFY" quotes don't even deserve the response I gave you. That said, I gave you my take on the motive behind reforming the way we teach math. You can take it or leave it. As I said before, i don't support common core...

Common core is good in georgia.
If the faculty doesn't support it, it will fail. I don't care what they are teaching.
My 3rd grader is doing word problem algebra and basic geometry.
The point intended for common core was to instill rigor in the curriculum. I wasn't taught common core growing up. But it is easy for me to see how it better prepares kids to be problem solvers (in life... if you aren't a problem solver then you are part of the problem for others around you).

I don't disagree. It's a fine way to teach math. I've gone through and looked at it. I have a computer science bachelors and an engineering masters so ive done a shite load of math in my time (too much )
The issue I have is that so much of education success is about the support kids get at home. Common core creates challenges there. As you alluded to...It's about community buy in. You can resist and make sure it fails or you can embrace it and probably end up teaching real mathematics principles to more Americans than the standard system ever could.
Most people in this thread have never taken advanced mathematics so really have no idea how ill prepared the standard method leaves you for Calculus 2 and 3 as well as discreet mathematics and finite math...

And I took Calc 2 and 3. Also DiffEq and Linear Algebra. My math education prior to this prepared me perfectly fine. But again, we are the vast, VAST minority. Common Core may have benefits for people who end up taking college-level mathematics. But what is the percentage of kids who get to that level?
Math should be taught to be the most useful for the largest group of students. Common Core epic fails at this.
Jack doesn't need to know the theory behind numbers. Jack just needs to know how to do simple math to balance his account quickly, compare prices quickly, and do basic math quickly.
Again, things at which Common Core has turned out to be horrible at.

The traditional method of math uses flash cards and half hour of homework every day to practice the standard methods .
Is the largest group of kids going to put in the effort for rote memorization?
I know that doesn't work for my 14 year old. He doesn't have the attention span for memorization like I did.
Maybe that works better in LA. But in GA, we are seeing success in teaching "why" and having the kids solve it from there.

For the record, rote memorization worked great for me in school. But I'm a workaholic. I work until it is done.
