How safe is D.C. for a family visit?

First trip to D.C. and bringing the family with 2 kids 10 and under.
Staying in Crystal City and planning on taking the subway into the sites.
Anything I should watch out for?
Always hear there are seedy parts to the city.

Go there twice a year. No issues and plenty of museums to goto with the kids.

You'll be fine, especially sticking to touristy areas.
Crystal City is pretty terrible. I've had to stay at the Crystal City Hilton for work before. But you can access the metro pretty easily.

The bureaucratic criminals have all but priced out the street criminal types from DC proper. It's one of the safer cities in the country these days for wandering around purposes.

If you can get iut of staying in Crystal City I would stay in Alexandria Va. It is very safe.

Agreed with other posters, if possible stay on the other side of the river. So many hotels, plenty of deals.

Good god. It’s our nations capital. It’s not a third world country. Stick to the tourist areas and NW DC and you’ll be fine.

You live in that shite hole Baton Rouge and you’re worried about bringing your kids to DC?

This. It’s awesome and easy to get across to the main sights.

Currently have reservations at the Embassy Suites there in Crystal City. Don't anticipate doing much stuff there, mostly in DC.
What is it about Crystal City that makes it terrible?

It's far as frick from DC for DC travel standards
You'll have to take the metro with all of the heathens. Think BR is bad? Wait till you hop on that metro!

Crystal City is just a concrete jungle. You’ll be fine in your hotel and to the metro. It’s just not an entertainment destination. Unlike Alexandria that has all the charm, dining, entertainment and costs of a real destination.

LOL - Safer than visiting Baton Rouge

All of this, there is nothing wrong with Crystal City, it's just not interesting as a vacation base

Thanks! Most of our time will be spent in DC. The lure of Crystal City is its proximity to DCA.

You can take the metro from Reagan to middle of downtown in 15 minutes. Stay downtown in NW DC, metro costs will add up, and they run slowly on the weekends like every 30 min... weekdays you’ll be packed in like sardines during work commutes... if staying downtown you could walk faster where you want to go.
I lived in downtown DC for 3 years, we stayed at the Hyatt place on K street last time we went back to visit..it’s a good central location.
