PFF shows he was indeed produced at high levels in terms of sacks & pressures. It’s not always about sacks

And there are A LOT of high level talent in the NFL that never went to one of the top 5 CFB conferences. I never liked the argument that a player never played in a top 5 CFB conference as a reason to not select a player.

If Davenport can attract double teams that will be huge for our DL.

Some people also thought ATL gave up too much to draft Julio Jones.

Exactly. The prognosticators would have loved it if we made the same trade to get a QB that is not going to be ready for at least 2 years and is well know to be a huge project as a passer.
If people hate the Davenport pick because he is not a polished DE, then how is it that they would have loved Jackson with the same trade/pick?
This is just another example of the media pushing agendas over logic. What is frustrating is the flow of parrots that show up every draft to repeat anything "negative" that is said about each Saints pick.
He is 6'6 265 and ran a 4.5 40. Holy shite is he a freak athlete. There is one clip where he peals off his pass rush to cover a RB on a wheel route and broke up the pass. I don't know if everyone understands the level of absolutely freakish ability required to make that play.
How long have Saints fan been clamoring for a stud DE to pair with Jordan? We finally get one and because the talking heads wanted to see Jackson link up with one of the best offenses in the league, people bitch.
The dude is a stud that has room to get better. His upside is off the charts good.

We gave up a mid 5th round pick, turned a 1st rounder into a higher 1st rounder, and gave up a future 1st. Honestly, the only "steep" thing we gave up was next year's first. If this is the guy the staff was sold on to be a game changer, like freeing up space for Cam and providing much needed depth and making plays of his own, and they felt they weren't going to get him where they currently were, then it's a good move. Let the talking heads talk, let our guys just do their job

For his first year, I agree, but for 2 first round picks he better develop into an every down player
Can you guys please stop saying we gave up two 1st round picks!!!! We swapped 1st this year! We gave up a 5th and a 1st
*And stop with the, he cost us two 1st in capital. He was going to cost a team a #1 regardless.

So this trade woupd have been a good trade if we moved up to get a guy that wouldn't even play for 2 years? But moving up to improve our biggest weakness is somehow bad?

All week, and even this morning, I've seen multiple player comparisons from the same prognosticators equate him to Ziggy Ansah, Aldon Smith without the baggage, Jadeveon Clowney, and Demarcus Ware.
How they (and the fans listening to them) can poo-poo the selection now is mind-boggling asinine.

I find it hilarious that all the talking heads on ESPN were shocked we didn't trade up for Jackson when he would have been there for us regardless at 27 So I guess they would have rather the Saints use two first rounders to move up for a guy who would have fell to us anyways

I didn't say give up dipshit. His cost was two first rounders (the 14th and next years first). We absolutely used two first rounders on him, that isn't a debate

simply because he wasn’t able to produce at a high level, even going up against lower-level competition in Conference USA.
I know they mostly played nobodies, but I think that he looked good against
Baylor: LINK
and TA&M: LINK
and people worried about his sack numbers, watch those two videos and you'll see that he played a lot of strong side DE, where players get fewer sack opportunities. He does a good job in the running game so I don't agree with the people saying that we will likely use him almost exclusively on 3rd down this season.
And not that it's a big deal since he won't do it often, but I saw some draft analyses saying that he struggled in coverage. He looked fairly fluid in his backpedal the few times he does it in those clips. He looks like he has the ability, he might just not have the mental aspects down yet.

And he would have not have seen the field for at least 2 years. It is absolutely ridiculous to listen to the criticism that the Saint are getting for this pick.
The Saints are in win now mode: So they should have picked a project QB that won't help them win now.
The Saints took a raw DE with tremendous upside: So they should have taken an even more raw QB prospect whose biggest knock is he needs A LOT of work to develop as an NFL passes.
The Saints gave up too much for Davenport: So the Saints should have made the same trade to take a more risky player.
WTF is wrong with people? Sure Davenport is a risky pick. So was Lattimore. So was Kamara. So was Ramczyk.
But you can't tell me that Jackson was less risky, more developed at his position, and in a better position to help the team win now than Davenport.

Reading what this guy said about the Kamara pick last year tells me all I need to know about his analysis. He is a fool and probably a lazy reporter to boot. If the Saints would have drafted Lamar Jackson he probably would have criticised that pick by saying the Saints killed their chance to make it back to the Superbowl before Brees retires.

The cost to get them was a lot less. Again, if Brees gets hurt next season, that GB would be getting a pretty high pick from us. We have enough talent to avoid a disaster of a season, but we finish with a pretty brutal schedule.

People bitched when SP traded up to take Kamara because the Saints already had "Adrian Peterson and Mark Ingram!!!"
You can't fix stupid.
They are always bitching, and will always bitch, about "the price" whether it's a projected player value vs picks given up...or a literal contract/cap cost for a veteran.
What they haven't realized is that SP doesn't mind at all going into debt (by draft or player compensation) to get the weapon he wants on his team.

Saints will have DE might avg 8 sacks a yr on rookie salary for 5 yrs.

What if we win the super bowl and the pick is 32nd?
Brees games missed due to injury- 1
Brees Super Bowls- 1

From the same author that wrote this:
So which is it?
quote:
Stud: Marcus Davenport, EDGE, UTSA All you need to know about Marcus Davenport’s combine is that he put up numbers comparable to Ziggy Ansah and Jadeveon Clowney, who went No. 1 overall a few years back. Already red hot after smoking the competition at the Senior Bowl, Davenport showed up to the combine at 6-foot-6 and over 260 pounds. He ripped through the 40 in 4.58 seconds and put up a 1.63-second 10-yard split. Davenport also showed explosiveness with a 10-foot-4 broad jump and showed up extremely well on the field running drills. At this point, it seems like a foregone conclusion that Davenport has vaulted from fringe first-round pick into the top half of Round 1.
So which is it?
