As a 7th grade history teacher, this is something that makes me look very forward to retirement. Luckily, I teach in a fairly conservative area, but this stuff leaks in. You now have to be very, very careful about the language you use in teaching. I can envision not even being able to use the work "slavery" within the next few years. This teacher presented a realistic lesson that parents knew about beforehand, and now the school is talking about ending it because one parent complained.

Every year, 6th graders at McKinley Elementary School study the Underground Railroad. In March, as in previous years, the students attended a four-day camping trip.
During the outing, school supervisors engaged the students in a re-enactment; however, one parent says it was not a positive learning experience and left her daughter upset. The school calls it a misunderstanding.

“All the black kids were slaves and all the other people were white,” says Dawn Peterson, a parent of one of the student’s who participated in the lesson.

The school says they did get positive feedback from some students, but will continue conversations as to whether they will continue that activity in the future. The school added the camping packet provided to parents lays out the camping itinerary.

Well good. Maybe if we quit teaching and talking about slavery, everyone will forget about it and move on with their lives.

Jesus Christ, grow balls. The real world is terrible and will drown you if you aren’t prepared.

What school takes 7th graders on a 4 day camping to?

Yeaaa I'm a go with poor judgment on using 6th graders to reenact a really fricked up era in our country's history.
Next up chirren! All the Jewish kids are ushered into the locker room showers and lights shut off... ya know to reenact the Holocaust.
Taking Kids to see a staged reenactment would be just fine. We went to see a Civil War battle and Plantation Life on field trips to Port Hudson and Magnolia Mound respectively.

Well, were the white people helping the black people escape slavery?

So next week’s roleplaying sessions where all the black kids are prisoners and the white kids are guards has been called off?

Who in the hell thought this was a good idea? Do they even Phillip Zimbardo?

It seems like common goddam sense that segregating kids - particularly to make black kids play the part of slaves - is a terrible idea that should never, ever be attempted.

There are too many idiots in education.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the claim that "all the black students were slaves" is exaggerated.
For starters, what do the demographics of this school look like? I googled the town and found this...
In South Holland 19.46% of the population is Caucasian. In South Holland 77.52% of the population is African American. In South Holland 0.45% of the population is Asian.
So let's surmise what probably actually happened here. Based on the town's demographics, In a class of 30 students, you'll have roughly 23 black kids, 6 white kids, and half an asian kid.
So I'm guessing like 4 of the 6 white kids ended up being non-slaves, meaning only 2 white kids were slaves. Throw in a little bit of sixth-grader immaturity and hyperbole, and boom, "all the slaves were black kids."
But yes, a teacher needs to have more wits about them so that this issue shouldn't have even arose.
