Considering buying one of these units, specifically Jura S9 ($300 off at Costco). I was wondering what experience F and D board members have with these units. Right now we go through a box of K Cups a month, 4 cups per weekday. On weekends I use a Technivorm. Dont have time to fool with it before work and kids get on the bus. Thinking we would save almost $400/ year not buying K cups vs whole beans. We should also get a better cup during the week. Not to mention the options and convenience when entertaining.

BUNN

I have one of these, and it takes about 30 seconds to put a filter and grounds in it. Full pot brewed in under 3 minutes, so probably less time than using a Keurig multiple times. We've had it maybe 5 years now, and I love it. I'll never buy another brand.

You basically just recommended something it seems like he already has, the Technivorm.

Yeah, this is what I am considering buying. Technivorm is the same as the Bunn, but looking for something that is ready to go with a touch of a button that is not Kuereg crap.

It takes me about 60 seconds to grind fresh coffee, get filtered water and start 8 cups of auto-pour over coffee

So I don't think I really understand the problem, but I certainly endorse you buying an expensive coffee machine and then convincing me as to why I need to buy it too

I am just curious of anyone’s personal experience with this type of machine. I will save enough on Not buying K Cups or going to Starbucks for wife’s Lattes to pay for it in about 18months.

I've used a similar Jura (not that exact model) at a friend's house....it's a pretty good shot of espresso, considering the effort. But you do have to clean the thing regularly, and it's not idiot proof or quick as Nespresso (the espresso equivalent of the convenience level of a k-cup).

I have separate grinder & espresso machine; the Jura saves time in the tamping and dumping of grounds, but that's about it. You still have to buy beans, keep them fresh, and put them into the machine every morning (don't be that guy who fills up the hopper and leaves the beans in there all week, yuk). So I'm not sure how much time you really will save over a traditional espresso setup.

I have none, but have you looked at Nespresso? I make a double shot latte every day for about $1.50. I think that's quite a deal and I do it in about two minutes.

I have the E8. I absolutely love my machine, but the upkeep can sometimes be a PITA.

Make sure you consider the maintenance costs. The filters, cleaning tablets, milk system cleaner, etc.... it can add up.

I have a Saeco XSmall Super Auto in my office. I purchased it refurb from Seattle Coffee Gear. I do not use the steam function, just the grind/espresso function. I have had very good luck with it, no breakdowns. Occasionally it loses the prime on the pump and I have to fiddle with a dial. I do not regret the purchase. Im able to feed it fresh beans and have a nice cup of espresso almost every afternoon here at work.

I catch some grief and ball busting, but as I tell my coworkers. I don't drink the peasants coffee.

Downsides:
-Grinder is pretty damn loud
-Periodic cleaning (slide apart rinse in sink)
-Generates waste water from self cleaning cycles, so I keep an extra foam cup under it to catch and easily dispose of the waste)
- I either pour over cold milk with ice, or microwave my milk. I'm not standing there steaming milk with a wand in my office

Upsides:
Pour in fresh beans - press button - fresh espresso daily

Can you get away with not using the filters? I already have a zero water container to filter water with. How often do you have to use the tablets for grinder and descaling?

Do you prefer coffee or espresso? If you don't want to deal with the cost of K-cups, why not just buy some of the refillable k-cups?

That's a lot of fine motor skills and calculating for those of us in this world that are morning-averse. I know if I forget to set the coffee maker up the night before, I may as well go ahead and punch myself in the nuts when I wake up.

Exactly why I am considering this thing.

When I used to go over to Texas, the R&D building had one that ground the beans and regulated the water for the strength and cup size selected. They rotated through various types of beans, and it made some of the best coffee I've had. Also had the frothing option, but I never used that.

I loved it; if it didn't cost $2000 I might consider one.

I have a Keurig. I use the filters where I use my own coffee. I buy Seattle’s Best Dark Roast.

8 cents per cup.

Not saying you shouldn’t get something else. Just saying that you don’t have to pay 50-60 cents per cup with a Keurig.

You know they make coffee makers with timers. You set that shite up the night before and it's brewed when you wake. Saves you like $275 too...

Are you talking about a chemex or just a drip?
