That would be weird to see an American pro sports team just decide to leave a league and find somewhere’s else to play

Happens all the time in Arena football.

Panathinaikos leaving Euroleague
Does anyone know what this means?

quote:European basketball is divided between domestic and continental leagues. Euroleague is the premiere continental league. Traditionally European sports have been more open than American sports with qualification rounds for clubs and such rather than having fixed franchises. But in recent years Euroleague has kinda changed that by giving the money clubs like Real Madrid and Pana permanent licences. There's been some pushback from other clubs and FIBA (which was pushed out of Euroleague about 15 years ago) has tried to start their own league, but it hasn't really gotten off the ground.
Does anyone know what this means?
Separately, Pana's owner is an interesting character and consistently trolls Turkish fans (mostly Fener fans). He and Pana fans also for whatever reason have convinced themselves that there's some great ref conspiracy against Pana specifically. He's been banned from all Euroleague arenas. As such, he's decided to move Pana to FIBA's league and the other Euroleague owners seem kinda happy he's gone.
That's kinda the summary.

Can you even go to a game as a rival fan?

Pretty sure their owner rushed the pitch with a revolver on his hip after a decision went against them in the final minutes of a soccer game.

That basically sums up European sports fans in general. The single loudest crowd reaction I've ever heard on tv was when Celtic scored the second goal in a 2-0 upset win over Barcelona in the Champions League several years ago (2013 maybe?)

That was the PAOK owner, not Panathinaikos.

I went to a Barcelona and Real Madrid basketball game in Barcelona and it was awesome. As you mention, the atmosphere is completely different.

I'm glad USA fandom is not so intensely identified with the team.
Some ancient blood rivalries exist in euro hoops.
Croatia club vs Serb club for instance.
