Encased in fire resistant insulation, covered by fire retardant gypsum board....hell even most "wood floors" are fire retardant planking.

Amazing these things still catch on fire. Almost as if there's more material in a house than just flame retardant things.

Fire retardant. Not fire proof. It's purpose is to make it more difficult for a fire to start. It can help to dampen the spread at the very beginning, when the fire isn't super hot yet. Which means it gives firefighters just enough time to get there before things get out of hand. Once that fire gets hot enough, that stuff does nothing.
