Does the bad spelling affect readers

I got out of school 30 years ago. Back then almost everything we read was edited by a publisher after a professional wrote it. Nowadays we read posts, blogs and internet articles written by people like myself. I used to be a better writer and a very good speller but my skills are diminished. Is it a case of “garbage in - garbage out” or am I losing my mental faculties?

Miles has lost control of internet spellers.

We're not forced to memorize how words are spelled anymore, so we don't.

Spelling, grammar, presentation, and being able to work a keyboard all matter. Why should I expend a lot of extra effort to decipher a wall of text, misplaced commas, and other mistakes? One or two items in a paragraph generally doesn't matter too much. But some people can't write a single sentence without a couple errors. I stop reading immediately when I notice these things.

Also, the way we speak is changing.
Some people are using text message short codes as actual spoken words, like OMG and K.
If you want to blame a service that led to this, blame Twitter with its initial 140 character limit and text messaging with 160 character limit.

It’s pretty awful at times. The misuse of the word “to” for “too” really gets me. We all ocassionallly misspell words from time to time, but some people don’t place much emphasis on it at all.

That was my experience as well.
That said, plenty of the kids my age didn't grow up with parents that read much. Unsurprisingly their writing skills suffered.

My posts are, typically, error free and written within the confines of that which is considered, correct grammar, including the syntax and morphology of the language. However, there is usually a drawback in that correctness. I typically need to type a few more words in order to succinctly and effectively draw out my intended meaning, whereas the typical poster would simply post one of these:
While it's apparent that there are posters who are ill educated in language arts, honestly, unless their profession is dependant upon their writing skills, as long as their intended meaning is well conveyed then their errors shouldn't bother anyone.

I teach English comp to high schoolers. Inevitably, I end up with papers that contain text lingo like "u" instead of "you."
I have to crush it because it's not academic English, but the students often seem surprised that it's an issue at all.

What passes for writing on that board makes my head spin.

Your argument could be considered weak, because schools still do spelling tests.
My son is in first grade, and every week, he has a test with 12 spelling words and two sentences. (So far, he has got an A+ every week, and he is rewarded with something small as a reward for his spelling tests)
I do get what you are saying though OP, and also agree with Pio about auto-correct. I will say that since posting on here for the last few years, I usually observe others grammar/spelling and pay more attention to mine.
