it stops the cops from showing up to your house and charging you with child neglect because you allow your kids to go play in a park down the street alone

I know I’m about to get 10 replies from folks talking shite about Mormons but Utah honestly might be the best state in the country to raise a kid in.

wasn't it the last census that for the first time the majority of people living in Salt Lake had no LDS affiliation? the Mormon thing is overblown. I would rank northern Utah numero uno for raising children

I like to envision kids on bikes in the neighborhood back in the 80s/90s. Then I remember, kids don't do that today.

Sending my youngest to the University of Utah this Fall. We were extremely impressed with the school and the city.

Mine does. I can always tell how many kids are at my house by how many bikes are in the driveway. I limit electronics for my daughter. Go outside and play and be a damn kid.

One could argue the same about Catholicism or Baptists or Muslims or Scientologists

More kids die every year from being locked in hot cars than are abducted.

Probably because parents are so protective, the kidnappers can't get to them

Not mine Roger. I'm a child of the 80s and want my daughter to have a similar childhood. My wife objects sometimes but I do my best. I want my daughter to be confident and independent.

Obviously all kids are different but mine is a straight A student and very trustworthy. That alone earns more independence with me.

Probably tells busy body people that aren’t the kids actual parents to get bent and mind their own damn business and not call the cops over perfectly acceptable things like kids riding their bikes more than 20 yards from their house

This. People wonder why kids don't play outside, but every time kids step out of view of their front door, the cops get called and the parents are threatened by protective services. Well of course kids would rather sit inside playing video games every day when their only outdoor options are their driveway, their backyard, or a supervised visit to the park.

A new law legalizing free-range parenting will soon take effect in Utah allowing children to do things alone like travelling to school.

I'm confused.

Was this ever illegal in the first place?

I mean are there laws on the books that literally say you aren't allowed to let your kids walk to school by themselves?

How can you make something "legal" that was never illegal in the first place?

Based on what I heard on the radio the other day they wanted to make sure that parents that let their kids walk to school alone, stay home alone after school, ride their bikes etc wouldn't be charged with child endangerment.

As I mentioned in a few posts above. I think this law is more of a law that tells parents "Hey, it is okay for you to let your 10 year old go play at the park a few blocks away. It is okay for you to let your kid and his buddy walk to and from school that is a half mile away. It is okay to let your kid ride his bike around the neighborhood. It is perfectly fine to leave your 11 year old home alone while you and your wife go to the movies. And to all you moronic busy bodies that call us for stupid complaints like outlined above leave us the hell alone. "
