Bravo Utah, I wander if this spreads across Southern States soon?

quote:

A new law legalizing free-range parenting will soon take effect in Utah allowing children to do things alone like travelling to school.

quote:

“Kids need to wonder about the world, explore and play in it, and by doing so learn the skills of self-reliance and problem-solving they’ll need as adults," Sen. Lincoln Fillmore, a sponsor of the bill, said in a statement to ABC News. "As a society, we’ve become too hyper about ‘protecting’ kids and then end up sheltering them from the experiences that we took for granted as we were kids. I sponsored SB65 so that parents wouldn’t be punished for letting their kids experience childhood.”

In my opinion this is very much a common sense law, and it's sad that we live in a society that has to define this stuff. I am glad it's happening though, we have become way to hyper critical of other people's parenting over the last 10 years thanks to social media / 24-7 media coverage.

I heard about this on the radio the other day. Good for Utah. It's nice to see common sense prevailing in some parts of the country.

Every kid should visit a trap house, unsupervised, at least once

It's weird that this has to be a law.

I know I’m about to get 10 replies from folks talking shite about Mormons but Utah honestly might be the best state in the country to raise a kid in.

I don't know wtf a trap house is but helicopter parents are doing society a disservice. Kids need to learn independence.

I have to tell my wife all of the time that's it ok that we don't know exactly where our 10 yr old and her friends went bike riding. The media has scared people into being overbearing parents.

this is a retarded, stupid, ignorant comment

Pedophiles have existed forever, in fact the punishment and enforcement of doing something as bad as pedophilia is actually EXTREMELY new in historical context.

So I would argue your argument is complete bullshite, as we keep "pedophiles" under control MUCH better in 2018 than we did even in the 80s.

Uncle Bobby who comes over to your house during Christmas time is also historically a MUCH bigger risk to your child than them going outside and being a fricking kid.

I agree. I should move there and live amongst like minded people (outside of the whole Mormon thing)

Article says that it is just redefining 'child neglect' to narrow the scope

Laws frequently have to have definitions redefined to help authorities understand how to interpret and enforce the law

All true.

Many professionals (academic advisors, counselors, housing directors, etc.) working in higher ed will tell you that students today are WAY less independent than students of the past, sometimes to the point of crippling their ability to perform well on their own in college.

Also, the likelihood of your child being kidnapped by a stranger is infinitesimally small. Like you have better odds of winning the lottery than your kid being kidnapped by a stranger.

Don't believe me? Look it up.

I don't understand what the law actually does. If you want to let your child walk alone to school now you can. The law surely isn't going to mandate that you are required to do that...so what exactly does this accomplish?

As a single guy, I probably wouldn’t move to Utah with the exception being if I got a job in downtown SLC. Though with a wife and children I wouldn’t hesitate to move anywhere in the state.

Looks like it basically protects parents from legal/criminal investigation when some overly-concerned third party freaks out about a nine-year-old walking by themselves. Yes, you're correct in that parents can let their kids walk alone now, but this prevents authorities from even looking into the matter.

I'm sure there have been lots of cases all over the country where some random person sees a kid walking by themselves, stops them and finds out their name, and then calls 911 trying to be a hero. Then authorities are obligated to look into the matter, and the parent has to explain themselves to the police. That shouldn't have to happen.

quote:

She explained that the new bill states that it won't be considered negligent by authorities, who cannot start an investigation, if a parent lets their child walk outside alone, play without supervision or allows them to wait in the car without an adult.

I agree with you to the a point, my neighborhood has kids walking around / doing things on their own all the time. But there have been a few cases where parents were actually taken to court for something as simple as letting their kid walk to a park in their neighborhood (though the charges were dropped on the one I'm thinking about... how long until these charges aren't dropped, and something like this law is needed to make sure the person isn't arrest to begin with?!).

This law goes a step ahead, and says basically: "This will never be a problem in Utah, we want kids to be kids"

I'm 40 and married with a kid. Downtown city life doesn't appeal to me much anymore
