At his insistence, the two countries launched talks last year to renegotiate the pact.

Senior administration officials Tuesday night outlined the details of the revised U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement, known as KORUS, most of which were announced over the weekend by the South Korean government.

Separately, Seoul won a permanent exemption from a new 25 percent steel tariff imposed by Trump as of last week, although not from a new 10 percent duty on aluminum imports. In exchange for the steel tariff exemption, South Korea agreed to cap its steel exports at 70 percent of the average volume from the past three years on a product-by-product basis.

The changes to the KORUS agreement include a provision that will double to 50,000 the number of cars each U.S. manufacturer can export to South Korea without having to meet the country’s more stringent safety standards. Others address additional auto regulatory barriers.

Seoul has also agreed to let the United States maintain its 25 percent tariff on light trucks for 20 extra years, instead of phasing it out by 2021 as originally negotiated.

Damn Tariffs!!!!!!

They still suck.

The justification for the steel and aluminum tariffs was absurd. It was labeled as a national security issue, and you marketed it as such too.

Now that SK will let us sell 25,000 more cars per year, the steel tariff on SK is no longer a national security issue?

If you’re using an Apple product, the device you used to type this post has parts that were made in South Korea. Semi conductors are big business there.

No,probably because of the tariff. They can't really compete.
I guess they could build them here though and escape the tariffs?
Kia and Hyundai both already build cars here.

in first trade deal

Well, he did say we'd be shocked at the speed of all these new trade deals.

Of course, we didn't think he meant shocked by how long they would take. Or that "new deals" would mean just very minor tweaking of Bush deals.

Hey, here's a fun fact: we weren't even selling enough vehicles to hit that 25K quota to begin with. And the new quota of 50K is a pretty tiny part of the 19 million US cars typically sold annually.

Here's how the Koreans felt about the art of this deal:

quote:

The deal has many in South Korea breathing a sigh of relief. The concessions made by Seoul were “modest,” said Ahn Duk-geun, a Seoul National University professor of international studies and an international trade expert. “It’s almost too good to be true.”

Not yet. Although in 20 years labor costs in S Korea will be prohibitively high anyway.

Is this a chicken tax country?

Then why cave on any tariffs?

Look, I'm glad they're being waived for all of these countries because I despise the idea of tariffs at all, but it validates the original criticism of the national security logic.

Pretty good stuff. Hopefully NAFTA renegotiation turns out similarly. If President Deals is willing to take some minor tweaks and spin the hell out of them I'll call that a win too.

I guess we just weren't anywhere near ready for the amount of winning we'd be experiencing this week under TPP

Yes, for almost every purpose SUVs are classified as light trucks.

^ Another example of an idiot pontificating on a subject that he is completely ignorant about .

The tariff is useful as a bargaining chip. Sure, we'll remove the tariff, if you give us something we want, and in every case where Trump has agreed to an exemption he's gotten something he wanted. That's called making a deal. Something we as a country haven't done in years, these other countries were quite content to watch us capitulate on every deal and get screwed, but why are YOU complaining about us doing things differently now?
